ABSTRACT

Zuhairo, Noor Akhla. 2013. An Analysis of Illocutionary Act in the Movie Script
of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Skripsi. English
Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, the
University of Muria Kudus. Advisor: (1) Dr. H.A. Hilal Madjdi, M. Pd, (2)

Communication is used to interact in the daily life. People need language
to make interact between one and another. Communication with other is one ways
to express their feeling, ideas and need. When they do communication with other,
they try to deliver their feeling, idea and emotion by saying some utterances. In
order to have a good communication, people need to understand what their partner
says. But, sometimes there is misunderstanding between speaker and hearer. What
the speaker intent is not same with the hearer’s grasp (implicit meaning). So,
people have to know how to use language in communication to avoid

misunderstanding.
The purposes of the study are the first to describe the types of illocutionary
act which have representatives or assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and
declaration in the movie script of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
And the second to describe the functions of illocutionary act; competitive,
convivial, collaborative and conflictive in the movie script of Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows Part 1.
In this research, I use descriptive qualitative research to analyze the
illocutionary act produced by the main characters in the movie script of Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. The design is qualitative because the
analysis does not use statistics procedure. Besides, it tries to find out the types and
functions of illocutionary act in the movie script of Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows Part 1. Meanwhile, this research uses descriptive method since it
describes the types and functions of illocutionary act and presents the analysis
descriptively.
The findings show that there are some types and functions of illocutionary
act found in this movie script. According to the type of illocutionary act, I found
137 representative or assertive types, 11 expressive types, 92 directive types, 2
commissive types and 0 declaration types. The majority type is representative or
assertive which means that the characters here are commit to the truth of

proposition and tell the audience (giving information) about their idea, thought,
feeling, experience and purpose through utterances. In addition, I also found four
functions of illocutionary act; they are 136 collaborative functions, 14 convivial
functions, 92 competitive functions and 0 conflictive functions. The majority
function is collaborative which means that the characters here do not use
politeness in uttering utterance because collaborative does not relevant with
politeness.

ix

Based on this research, it is found that illocutionary act can be produced in
most of utterances. As the result of this study, it is suggested for the students,
lectures, teachers, and for the readers to learn more about illocutionary act to
improve and enrich their knowledge.

ABSTRAK

Zuhairo, Noor Akhla. 2013. Analisis Tindak Ilokusi pada Naskah Film Harry

Potter and the Deathly Hallows bagian 1. Skripsi. English Education
Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, the University of
Muria Kudus. Advisor: (1) Dr. H.A. Hilal Madjdi, M. Pd, (2) Agung Dwi
Nurcahyo, SS, M.Pd
pikiran, emosidan hasrat mereka.
expressive, and declaration dalam naskah film Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows Part 1 dan yang kedua untuk mendiskripsikan fungsi tindak ilokusi;
Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
naskah film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
naskah film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
