STATEMENT
At the invitation of His Excellency Adam Malik, Presidium Minister
for Political Affairs/Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia,
His Excellency Thanat Khoman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom
of Thailand, visited Indonesia from the 29th to the 31st of August 19 6 6.
Foreign Minister Thanat Khoman was accompanied by Lt-General
Charoen Pongpanich, Director of the Armed Forces Intelligence;
Mr. Sompong Sucharitkul, Secretary to the Foreign Minister; and
Mr. Pracha Gunakasem, Chief of the Press Division, Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
During their stay in Indonesia the Foreign Minister and his party
called on His Excellency President Sukarno at the Merdeka Palace.
They also called on the Chairman of the Presidium His Excellency
General Suharto; on the Presidium Ministers Their Excellencies
Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, Sanusi Hardjadinata, and Idham Chalid;
and on the leaders of the Gotong Royong House of Representatives.
Prompted by their common desire to translate the already existing
bonds of friendship between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of
Indonesia into an ever closer and mutually advantageous pattern of
relationship, the two Ministers held wide-ranging discussions on
various matters in which both countries share common concern, especially
the promotion of bilateral relations through trade and economic
cooperation as well as technical and cultural exchanges.
They had an exchange of views on the question of regional cooperation
amongst the countries in Southeast Asia, which was also a subject of
previous discussion between Foreign Minister Adam Malik and other
recent visitors.
Minister Thanat Khoman and Minister Adam Malik agreed that
close and mutually beneficial cooperation amongst the countries of the
region would be the best means to ensure the continued progress and
prosperity of their peoples, and at the same time it would contribute
significantly towards efforts to preserve peace and security in the area.
They, therefore, agreed on the necessity of taking practical steps to
provide an effective framework within which such cooperation could be
further promoted.

The two Ministers gave serious consideration to the war in Vietnam,
which because of its destructive ravages is causing untold sufferings to
the people of Vietnam and continues to pose a grave threat to peace in
Asia and even to the world at large. They concurred that a peaceful
solution should be speedily found, and in this context reaffirmed their
belief in the soundness of the principle that Asian problems are best
solved by Asians themselves. The Thai Foreign Minister expressed his
view that Indonesia , which by the recent signing of the agreement to
normalize relations with Malaysia has demonstrated its wisdom and its
peace-loving policy, is now in a still better position to play a more
active role in helping to find a peaceful solution to the Vietnam conflict.
The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs acknowledged the sincerity in
the appeal made by the Foreign Ministers of Thailand, the Philippines
and Malaysia on August 6, 19 66 to Asian countries to come together to
consider ways and means to restore p eace in Vietnam .
Foreign Minister Thanat Khoman informed his colleague of his
Government's willingness to normalize relations between his country and
the Kingdom of Cambodia and expressed the hope that this willingness
would be reciprocated. The Indonesian Foreign Minister, while warmly
welcoming the possibility of reconciliation between the two sister nations,
expressed his Government 1 s view that good and harmonious relations
between Thailand and Cambodia would contribute to other efforts towards
consolidating peace, stability and fruitful cooperation in the region.
The Thai Minister also expre ssed his Government's pleasure in
learning that Indonesia would soon resume its active participation in the
United Nations.
At the conclusion of his visit Foreign Minister Thanat Khoman
expressed his gratitude to Foreign Minister Adam Malik for the cordial
reception and hospitality accorded to him and his party by the Government
and people of Indonesia.
