LETTER OF INTENT
BETWEEN
THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
AND
THE GOVERNMENT OF AUSTRALIA
CONCERNING
COOPERATION IN FORESTRY INCLUDING CAPACITY BUILDING
The Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of
Australia are hereinafter referred to as the Parties:
Taking into account the fruitful bilateral cooperation pursued by the
Australia-Indonesia Ministerial Forum and the Working Group on Agriculture,
Food and Forestry Cooperation;
Desiring to further strengthen and develop cooperation between the two
countries in the field of forestry including capacity building;
Believing that such cooperation would serve their common interest in efforts
to address climate change and contribute to sustainable forest management
by ensuring the optimum condition of the forests managed by well qualified
personnel;
In accordance with the prevailing laws and regulations of the respective
countries;
Have reached the following understanding:
Build on the existing strong bilateral relationship between Australia and
Indonesia where the Parties:
1. Cooperate to build capacity of forest professionals and experts to
implement Sustainable Forest Management practices in the region
including preventing illegal logging.
2. Work toward determining legal requirements for the trade of timber and
wood products.
3. Support the development of systems that assure the legality of timber
and wood products which include forest certification and chain of
custody.
4. Collaborate to enhance forest law enforcement and governance and
encourage sourcing of timber and wood products from legal and
sustainable forest practices.
