JOINT COMMUNIQUE
CONCERNING THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS
BETWEEN
THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA AND THE PORTUGUESE REPUBLIC
The Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the
Portuguese Republic:
Desiring to promote and strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation between the
two countries and peoples on the basis of equality, mutual respect for each other's
sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity as well as the principle of noninterference in the internal affairs of each other;
Guided by the principles and purposes enshrined in the Charter of the United
Nations;
Recalling the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the Vienna
Convention on Consular Relations of 1963;
Taking into account that both parties have established Interests Sections in their
respective capitals following the Agreement signed on 27 September 1998, in the
framework of tripartite negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations SecretaryGeneral;
Recalling the meeting between the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and the
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Portugal held on 13 November 1999 in New York, during
which both Ministers agreed on the idea raised by Portugal to intensify bilateral contacts
towards the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Portugal;
Convinced that the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two

countries will contribute to the promotion of stable and mutually beneficial relations based
on the historic ties between the two countries.
Agree to re-establish diplomatic relations between the two countries at
ambassadorial level, as of the date of the signing of this Joint Communique.
