THE CORRELATION OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY BUILDING
STRATEGY AND SPEAKING SKILL BY ENGLISH STUDENTS OF
STATE ISLAMIC INSTITUTE OF PALANGKA RAYA

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation between the
two variables, they are vocabulary building strategy and speaking skill. For
this study the writer takes students sixth and eighth semester of English
students at IAIN Palangka Raya in academic year 2015/2016 which
consisted of 70 students as the participants. On taking the sampling the
writer used rendom sampling.
This research used correlation design with quantitative approach. For
the instrument, the writer used two kinds of instruments to collect the data
of two variables. The first instrument is questionnaire sheet, that contains
12 items of 4 point Likert-Scale. This questionnaire is used to measure

students’ perception. The second instrument is documentation. In
measuring the correlation the writer take a theory of Pearson Product
Moment. The writer calculate it in manual and used SPSS program in
order to make easy and valid.
The result of this research showed the result of rxy calculation for
vocabulary building strategy and their speaking test is -0,092 Based on the
table of interpretation of rxy value, the result of rxy calculated (-0,092) is
between 0.000 and 0.200. This value detects a negative correlation. From
the significance (2 tailed), the writer get the score .447. It means
N.sign>0.05 which showed Ho cannot be rejected. The result showed no
correlation between two variables, vocabulary building strategy and
speaking skill of 6th and 8th semester of English students at IAIN Palangka
Raya.
Key words: Correlation, Vocabulary building strategy, Speaking skill.

ABSTRAKSI

Berbicara.
