CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

In this chapter the writer presents background of study, limitation of the
study, problem statement, object of the study, benefit of the study, and research
paper organization. They are as follows:

A. Background of Study
Human speak and convey their feeling in various ways. The speakers
express their feeling by making their words fit with their internal psychology
world which is generally known as expressive utterance. Expressive
according to Oxford Advanced Learner‟s Dictionary (1995: 407) belongs to
adjective, which means “showing or able to show one‟s feeling or thought.”
According to Tarigan (1986: 33) expressive utterance is a psychological
statement of the speaker to express or state her/his feeling about thanking,
congratulating, apologizing, accusing, priding, and condolence.
In attempting to express them, people do not only produce utterances
containing grammatical structures and words, they perform actions via those
utterance. One of the acts can be shown through love. Love is an important
way to maintain a relationship. The way people express their feeling to
someone has to influence to hearer, but it depends on the interaction between

the speaker and the hearer and the interpretation that is caught by the hearer.

Human will express something if they attract on something especially with
their couple.
There have some learn source studies explored love expression for
example; Love Expression in Mixed Blessing Translated into Berkah Penuh
Cobaan by Daniel Steel by Aryanik (2011). Then, Needs for Love and
Belongingness in Maclahlan’s Sarah, Plain and Tall Novel: A Humanistic
Psychological Approach by Nasir (2012), and the last Love Expressions
Found in Twilight Novel by Stephenie Meyer: a Pragmatics Analysis by Milla
(2011). All those love expression research are analyzed about the type of love
expression and its meaning. Then, here the researcher wants to explore again
about love expression research with politeness strategy which never analyze
before.
Related to the explanation above, the writer is interested in analyzing
the love expression in the romance novel. “The Last Promise” novel is one of

the best seller novels in New York story between Eliana the girl with a
broken family and the new American that looks interested in her eyes named
Ross Story. Eliana‟s husband never deserves her, then at the same way. Ross
always helps her when she needs help. And finally they fall in love each
other. After many times, Eliana‟s husband named Maurizio knows about their
relationship and the problem comes to their life.
The example of utterance love expression that is found in “The Last
Promise” and its analyze: “I’m glad you came to Rendola Ross.”

Locutionary

: the speaker (Eliana) said to the hearer that Eliana is
happy because Ross has come to Rendola.

Illocutionary

: the utterance is said by Eliana to Ross that Eliana
express her feeling that she is very happy. She looks

so shining when said that to Ross. Since Ross comes
to Rendola, Eliana not feel loneliness again and she
never feels very happy like that night before. The
intention of the utterance is to showing affection.

From this case, the writer is interested to take this phenomenon that
also happened in our social life into her research. Many people usually read
romantic novel but don‟t understand the illocutionary meaning of the love
expressions exactly. So, the writer makes this research to show one of many
