Letter of Intent
Between
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the Department
of Commerce of The United States of America
and
The !Vlinistry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of
The Republic of Indonesia
on
Cooperation in the Field of Ocean and Marine Science and Technology
ln an effort to address emerging coastal management and marine resource issues, the U.S.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and
Fisheries (MMAF) of the Republic of lndonesia have been cooperating over the past three
years on developing and implementing an ecosystem approach for Indonesia. Both
organizations continue to benefit greatly from this partnership and have expressed an interest
to explore expanding their collaboration in the field of ocean and marine science and
technology.
This letter of intent is to express mutual support for ongoing collaborative efforts, and to seek
opportunities to develop enhanced cooperation in the following thematic areas:
• lmplementing an ecosystem based approach for marine and coastal issues;
• Formalizing relations between the US Sea Grant College Program and the lndonesian Sea
Partnership to promote training, education and capacity building opportunities for both

sides and in the region;
• Exploring further opportunities to carry out joint work on ocean-climate research ocean
observation and applications that help implement Global Earth Observation System of
Systems (GEOSS) priorities in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean;
• Identifying other marine topics for possible collaboration that are of mutual interest to
both side.
Current and future activities, other than the exchange of data and ideas, may be covered by
appropriate agreements.
