The students will develop their English skills when they learn literature. In literature, the students encourage to analyze the character, setting, and think deeply about the problems. Based on the students’ opinion above, it can be inferred that literature helps the students to develop their English skill and to understand human’s problem. It is also supported by Rees 1973 that learning literature helps the students to understand the strange relationship, such as quarrel, friendly. By reading short story or novel, the learners can understand others’ experiences. The students will use the experiences of other people and knowledge through reading literature. They will also have deep analytical mind of text and problems. It is also supported by Rees 1973: It will help the students to have careful attention in detail. In literature, the students encourage to analyze the character, setting, and think deeply about the problems. They will have habit to read deeply and help them to enjoy reading. Therefore, they will have a better understanding towards themselves and human’s being. A better understanding towards themselves means that they can improve the ability of reading, writing and having rich vocabulary. Learning literature will also optimize the function of the brain. Left hemisphere concerns with analytic thought, logic, language, science and math and also literal while right brain hemisphere concerns with holistic thought, intution, creativity, art and music, poems, rhymes and parables. Drama, art, prose, poetry, play performance will develop the right hemisphere of the brain, whereas the literal text will develop the left hemisphere. Therefore, literature will help the learners to develop both left and right hemisphere as it will keep the balance of the right and left hemisphere. 60 Learning literature helps us knowing other country. Rees 1973 stated that English literature can also be helpful for foreign student or visitor who wishes to learn something about particular region, and to understand how humans’ character and emotion are influenced by natural surroundings. By studying the literature of other countries and culture, we begin to understand the country and its people. By knowing other culture, they will easily get socialized thus. It helps us in some sense making ourselves better people. This is surely an important step toward such international understanding and world peace.
