CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
The first part of this chapter presents the answer of the problems formulation. The second part covers the suggestions for the future researcher and
the implementation of teaching learning activities using literary work.
A. Conclusions
Based on the analysis there are three mains points that become the answers of the problems. The first point is the description of Ammu’s character. The
second point is the portrayal of caste system in the novel. The third point is the reason of Ammu to struggle for equality. And the last point is what Ammu does to
pursue the equality. From the analysis, it can be concluded that Ammu is tough, brave, motherly,
strict, beautiful, and hard working. Ammu’s experiences in the past make her become a tough woman. She accepts the reality that she is a widow although the
society treats her badly. She is also a brave woman. She dares to ask divorce from her husband and bring all of her children together with her. Moreover, Ammu also
has a great sense of motherhood. She does anything to protect her children. Her protection of her children makes her become a very strict mother. She is very
strict in order to prove to the society that her children also have the love other children do. Ammu is also a hard worker and she uses it to pursue the equality.

All the description of Ammu can be seen through the speech, personal description, character as seen by another, conversation of others, mannerism, and reaction.
Secondly, it can be concluded that caste system, as portrayed in this novel, still deeply roots and influences the Indians. The caste system is divided into some
classes, based on the occupation, area, language, and so forth. Based on the occupation, there are four castes in India. They are: the Brahmans, groups of some
priests, the Kshatriyas consists of rulers, nobles, and fighter, the Vaishyas people in general, ordinary householders, the Sudra are the servile classes drawn from the
people of the country and the last are the Untouchables. The Untouchables are not allowed to enter the Touchable house. Their existence will pollute the whole
house. The fates of the Indians depend on their caste. Thirdly, Ammu has to struggle for equality because of some reasons. The
reasons are the caste system, the patriarchal system and the society’s treatments. The caste system bans her to do thing freely and achieve the equality. She has to
obey the rules or she will be punished. The patriarchal system almost has the same function like the caste system. It bans Ammu to get the equality like men.
This condition makes Ammu’s position weak in the family and the society. After her divorce from her husband she returns to her home in Ayemenem, but the
society treats her differently. She has no rights in her parents’ home because she is a widow. The society has the opinion that she is a woman without a good
morality. Fourthly, there are four ways that Ammu does to struggle for equality. First,
she starts to find a job in order to give a decent life for her family. Through her PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
struggle, she is able to fulfill the esteem needs and self actualization needs because she can get a job and get the recognition from the society. Second, Ammu
wants to prove that she is equal with men. She decides to marry a Bengali man. She chooses her husband and marries him. This is actually forbidden in the caste
system. Third, Ammu gains the respect, recognition, and appreciation from her family and society because she is able to give a decent life for her children. She
tries to pursue the equality because she wants to prove to her family and the society although she is a widow and single parents she is able to give her children
a decent living condition. The last is she has a love affair with an Untouchable. She wants to prove that she is able to do what a man does. She wants to fulfill her
belongingness and love needs. As a human being she has an equal right same as the other.
