Having a Love Affair

Her job as a receptionist does not last long. She is sick. She has to quit from her job and tries to find another job. On her way to find a new job, on an interview as a secretary, she dies. She dies alone in a grimy room Roy 161. According to Maslow 42, when a person is able to fulfill esteem needs she will feel confident. In this novel, Ammu is able to fulfill esteem needs. She already proves that she is able to earn money by herself. Although only for a while, she is confident to tell her children that they will have a house and they will live together.

d. Having a Love Affair

According to Maslow 41, people will seek a friend, a sweetheart, a wife or husband to find the feeling of belonging and to feel the affection from them. As a woman, Ammu tries to fulfill her belongingness and love needs. As a widow, she has no partner to share with. She looks for a person who will set her free from the situations that press her. Velutha is an Untouchable man, a member of the lowest caste, who becomes Ammu’s lover. He is called Velutha, which means white skin in Malalayam, because he is very black. Velutha is a carpenter. He can make intricate toys such as tiny windmills, rattles, and minute jewel boxes from dried palm reeds. He can carve perfect boats from tapioca stems and figurines on cashew nuts. Velutha is an untouchable with multitalented abilities Roy 73. In fact, Ammu’s feeling to Velutha is forbidden. They have different castes. Velutha is an Untouchable, while Ammu comes from Touchable. If they are against the rule, they will be outcaste or banished Hutton 65. Ammu breaks the rule because she wants to find equality. Equality between men and women is very hard to achieve in the caste system. She wants to be free in choosing someone who deserves her love. Ammu’s love is growing. Ammu hopes Velutha can set her free from her problems. Velutha is a figure of a father that her children have never had. Ammu feels envious when seeing her children have a close relationship with Velutha. She sees they smile together. Although Ammu is their mother, Ammu feels that she has no part in their smile. Sometimes, she is confused whether she envies Velutha or her children. She hoped it had been him. She was surprised at the extent of her daughter’s physical ease with him. Surprised that her child seemed to have sub world that excluded her entirely. A tactile world of smiles and laughter that she, her mother, had no part in. ammu recognized vaguely that her thoughts were shot with a delicate, purple tinge of envy. She didn’t allow herself to consider whom it was that she envied. The man or her own shild. Or just their own world of hooked fingers and sudden smiles Roy 176. Ammu breaks the rule to find equality and to be free. She wants someone beside her, to be her partner. She longs for affection. She does not care who she loves now whether a Touchable or an Untouchable. She hopes that the man in her dream is Velutha. She hopes the man in her dream can be true and set her free. Who was he? Who could he have been? The God of Loss. The God of Small Things. The God of Gooese Bumps and Sudden Smiles. He could do only one thing at a time. Ammu loned for him. Ached for him with the whole of her biology Roy 330. Ammu keeps walking and then meets Velutha in the riverbank. The terror starts. Ammu and Velutha do something that is forbidden. They make love in the riverbank. For a while, they forget about the problem that may arise after it. They forget about their caste. The only thing they know is that they love each other and they need each other. Ammu fulfill her belongingness and love needs that cannot be fulfilled after she has divorced from her husband. She longs for affection. Ammu is trying to be equal with men by choosing to love an Untouchable man. She knows she breaks the caste rule, but she keeps do it. She breaks the rule. She wants to be equal like men that have a freedom of choice in choosing their wife. Nielsen 15 says that all human being, capable of such choices, have an equal right to choose how they shall live. Beside that, it is also stated that, all human beings have a right to an equality of concern and respect, a right they possess not in virtue of birth, characteristic, merit, or excellence, but simply as human beings with the capacity to make plans and give justice. Based on Nielsen’s theory, Ammu is trying to pursue her equality as human being. Because she is capable of such choices, she wants to love someone based on her choice. Related to Maslow 41, Ammu wants to fulfill her love and belongingness needs. As a widow, she does not have a partner to share with. So when she meets Velutha, she is able to fulfill her needs. The second part covers the suggestions for the future researcher and the implementation of teaching learning activities using literary work.

A. Conclusions

Based on the analysis there are three mains points that become the answers of the problems. The first point is the description of Ammu’s character. The second point is the portrayal of caste system in the novel. The third point is the reason of Ammu to struggle for equality. And the last point is what Ammu does to pursue the equality. From the analysis, it can be concluded that Ammu is tough, brave, motherly, strict, beautiful, and hard working. Ammu’s experiences in the past make her become a tough woman. She accepts the reality that she is a widow although the society treats her badly. She is also a brave woman. She dares to ask divorce from her husband and bring all of her children together with her. Moreover, Ammu also has a great sense of motherhood. She does anything to protect her children. Her protection of her children makes her become a very strict mother. She is very strict in order to prove to the society that her children also have the love other children do.
