2. Representation of Clergy in the Eighteenth Century
Clergy was one of classes in the eighteenth century. Clergy at that time had prosperous life among the society. The prosperity was affected by getting the
taxes from peasants. That traditional custom gave advantage for clergy. As stated by Williams that “as the eighteenth century advanced, clergy became the sword
and buckler of conservatism; and though in their clashes with the crown they talked the advanced language of liberalism, their only concern was to protect
property and privilege from attack 1972: 207.” The prosperous clergy in the eighteenth century is represented in the novel. It can be seen from the properties
or manufactured setting in the monastery. The whet administered, I was left alone for a little in the monastery
garden. This is no more than the main court, laid out in sandy paths and beds of parti-coloures dahlias, and with a fountain and a statue of the
Virgin in the centre p.47.
The monastery garden is decorated beautifully with sandy paths, many flowers, a fountain and a statue. It looked beautiful and pleasant. It brings a comfortable
atmosphere of living. The prosperous clergy is represented through the building or room that was usually used in the novel.
Thence my good Irishman took me around the workshops, where brothers bake bread, and make cartwheels, and take photographs; where one
superintends a collection of curiosities, and another a gallery of rabbits p.49.
The prosperous clergy in the eighteenth century is represented by a description of a room which has some functions in the novel. The room has some functions to
make cartwheels, bake bread, take photographs, etc. Moreover, the prosperous life of clergymen can be seen from the condition of the room which is clean and

decorated with accessories. The objects in the room give information about the financial condition of the society.
It was clean and whitewashed, and furnished with strict necessaries, a crucifix, a bust of the late Pope, the imitation in French, a book of
religious meditations…p.47.
This characteristic of setting in the novel is a representation of the eighteenth century French clergy who were rich and prosperous in life.
