1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study

There are some ways to express ideas, especially in the literary works. There is a literary work that brings us to the world of dreams and takes us away from a reality. It has to be contrasted with a literary work that needs the interpretation. Literature is a personal expression of feeling including experience, idea, motivation and confidence in a concrete description by using the language. Novel is a part of prose form beside the short story. The most of people read novels and short stories. A novel expresses some aspects of human’s love and existences. Because a novel talks about the human activities and describes what has been happened in surrounding, so it is written in a long composition.

Kenney (1966; 103) says, “Novel is generally thought of as containing about forty five thousand words or more”. So a novel is longer narrative than a short story and a novella.

Novel, as a literary work has been known since eighteenth century in England. Beside novel, we also can find others literary works; there are poem, poetry, drama, and prose. A prose is often as a specific term for all discouraged spoken or written which is not patterned into recurrent matrix united that we call verse. Prose has longer meaning because it covers everything that is written as literary work but it includes some of nonfiction works.

This novel titled “ A Brief Description of Mystic in Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl’s Novel Beautiful Creatures”, the meaning of mystic in the Greek

(14)

language is secret (geheim), secretive (geheimzinnig), hidden (verborgen), dark (donker) or shrouded in thick darkness (in het duister gehuld).

There are a lot of understanding about the mystical, both based dictionary, anthropology and philosophy itself. Here's some understanding of the mystical:

The Department of Language ( 2002:5) says, “Mystic is highly believed to supernatural cannot be explained by an ordinary human reason it is a sub- system that exists in almost all religions and religious systems to satisfy the human desire to experience and feel the emotion united with God”.

Koentjaraningrat (1980:132) says, “A form of religion that is based on belief in one God who is considered encompasses all things in nature and the religious system itself from the ceremonies aimed at achieving unity with god”.

When we combined the mystic with culture, then in truth is a mystical irrational knowledge or could not understand the ratio, meaning that a causal relationship cannot be understood that occur ratios and have the forms of thought and expression of absolute truth in a society. Expression and irrational thoughts have formed a behavior in public life and became a culture.

The writer chooses the Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl’s novel “Beautiful Creatures” as the resources of the data because the writer interested in the story. Beautiful Creatures is a good novel because it teaches how to use magic that well.

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The understanding of literary elements can be very helpful in analyzing literary work, for example, novel, drama and poetry. Literary elements can be classified into two categories. They are intrinsic and extrinsic elements.

Semi (1998:31) says, “the intrinsic element of a literary work includes elements which establish a literary work inside. The elements are theme, plot, setting character and characterization and figure of speech.” Extrinsic element refers to social condition in a society and psychological condition. In this paper the writer employs one of literary works especially novel to be analyzed. And she will employ several extrinsic elements to analyze the novel, namely mystic.

2.1 CHARACTERS

Character is a human being in the fiction who plays action in the novel. The character does the action like making conversations or doing activities. By understanding there would have been required as a manifestation of the human figure and his life to be told.

Karl (1967:238) defines that a character is interest in the very personal reason that we want to see how other people live, how they make decision and react to responsibility, how they pursue their goal.

Roberts (1983:54) says, “Character in a literary work is a representation of a human. Specifically, the quality was in him and that determine how humans act in a variety of conditions or attempt to deal with the surrounding environment”.

Roberts (1995: 131) says, “As in a life, the figure could be lazy or ambitious, agitates or calm, like fighting or timid, assertive or shy, confident or

(18)

doubtful, very brave or scared, noisy or quiet, can be trusted or liked to lie, conscientious or careless, unreasonable or irritable, biased or unfair, or fraudulent blunt, "winner" or "loser" and so on.

The British novelist and critic E.M Forster, in his critical work Aspects of the Novel, calls the two major types “round” and “flat”.

The basic trait of round character is that it recognize, change with, or adjust to circumstances. The round character is usually the main figure in a stories profits from experience and undergoes a change or alteration, which may be shown in (1) an action and actions, (2) the realization of new strength and therefore the affirmation of previous decision, (3) the acceptance of a new condition, or (4) the discovery of unrecognized truth. ( Roberts,1995: 133).

Flat characters are minor (e.g. relative, acquaintance, functionaries), although not all minor character are necessarily flat. (Edgar,1995:134).

Oxford Advice Learner’s Dictionary of Current English (2000) say that : (1) All the qualities and features that make a person, groups of people, and places different from others; (2) the way of something is, or a particular quality or feature that a thing, an event or a place has; (3) strong personal qualities such as the ability to deal with difficult or dangerous situations; (4) the interesting or unusual quality that a place or a person has; (5) a person, particularly an unpleasant or strange one; (6) an interesting or unusual person; (7) the opinion of the people that you have, particularly of whether you can be trusted

(19)

The Character (5) and (6) has informal meaning, while number (7) has formal meaning. Maxwell (2001) says, “Character is more than just words, but a choice that brings success. It is not a boon, but built little by little, with our thoughts, words, actions, habits, courage endeavor, and even formed from the difficulties of life”.

In National Conference on Character Building, Jakarta (2005), “Character has been defined as the inner disposition conductive to right conduct. It is a person’s collection of attitudes and habits which enable and facilitate moral action.

It is the foundation for all activity in the world; every task and every achievement bears the imprint of one character. Moreover, as we shall see, one result of attaining good character is that individuals are able to love others well and become more productive citizens. Good character is thus the foundation for all human endeavors.

David (2004:143) says, “the deliberate effort to help people understand, care about, and act upon core ethical values. When we think about the kind of character we want for our children, it is clear that we want them to be able to judge what is right, care deeply about what is right, and then do what they believe to be right, even in the face of pressure from without and temptation from within”. DR.

(20)

bertanggung jawab, menghormati hak orang lain, kerja keras, dan sebagainya (Thomas Lickona, 1991).

2.2 CHARACTEROZATION

Every story has characterization which describes all about person or people character. There are many kinds of character and these all are different with each other. Collins Dictionary defines that characterization is the way how an author or an actor describes or shows what a character is like. Characterization also describes about the act of creating and developing a character.

Characterization consists of two types: Direct and Indirect Characterization. Direct characterization tells the reader what the personality of the character is. While, Indirect characterization shows the things that reveal what the personality is of the characters look like, does, and says as well as.

Characterization is often called disposition, it is a depiction of the characters. This depiction includes a state of physical and spiritual leaders. The situation is a form of birth figures and who the characters, circumstances of birth includes the way of life of the characters, character attitudes, beliefs, customs, etc. 2.3 MYSTIC

Etymologically, mysticism is derived from the Greek “Misterion” from the root, “Myen” is the people who search the secrets of reality, Myen means turning a blind eye or close. The meaning of Etymologcal meaning of mystic about mistisisme at the beginning of this study will be able to help us to

(21)

Observing about mystics is a fun thing because it promises a new one for anyone who explores. For hundreds of years, the world has been widely mystic stir interest in academics to explore and reveal diverse facts and competence levels. Reason who encouraged me, among other things: first, desire ecumenical or good and bad reasons, is to find something that is common in that.

Mystical is basically a religious experience that can be introversive (the tendency of a person who is more emphasis on inner aspect) and extroversive (the tendency of a person who is more emphasis on outward). The experience is not related to time, there is a connection to something transcendent, creates a feeling of tranquility and happiness followed self-control ability ourselves.

In terms there are meaning about mystic, include:

a. The means a belief that the final truth about reality cannot be obtained through ordinary experience, and not through intellectual experience (mind), but it can be obtained through a mystical experience or non-mystical rational intuition.

b. Unusual non-rational experience of reality that includes all realitas transenden (something that goes beyond the mundane) which allow ourselves united with the reality that is usually considered as a source or basis of the existence of all things.

Rufus (1988:33) says, “The Mystic is a type of religion that gives pressure on the consciousness directly related to God, consciousness God's presence is immediate and familiar.

(22)

W.R. Inge in mysticism in religion says:

• Mystic is a feeling of merging with God (Attopfleiaener).

• Mystic is an attitude of mind in which all relations aimed to establish the relationship of the soul with God (Edward Caird).

• Mystic is the realization that whatever we experience in reality is just a mere element of the existence says "Something else" (Ricard Nettleship). A. TYPES OF MYSTIC

a. Union Mystic

Mystical union comes from the Latin language that is “inua mystica” which has a meaning or a union of the human soul experiences with a higher reality that occurs without intermediaries.

b. Personal Mystic

The second type is derived from the term mysticism of personality and more known as the mystic personality, which means the relationship between man and God.

c. Al-Junun

This mystic makes a person forget about their affection and love for someone they love.

d. Al-Hawatif

(23)

3. THE DESCRIPTION 3.1A Brief Description of The Mystic

Center of Education and the Department of Language ( 2002) say “Mystic is highly believed to supernatural cannot be explained by ordinary human reason Is a sub- system that exists in almost all religions and religious systems to satisfy the human desire to experience and feel the emotion united with God”.

Types and models in this novel is witchcraft. In this novel that witchcraft is Lena Duchannes. Lena uses her magic with her eyes and hands. Witchcraft is a deed which can draw closer to the devil, because Lena has a mystical, she often calls a freak woman. Such a picture can be seen in the following statement:

“Shut up, I whispered, a little too loudly. You know that’s not her name. It may as well be. She’s livin’ with that freak, Charlotte said”. (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl,2013 : 58)

With her magic, Lena can destroy everything she wants to destroy. In one day, her friends are mocking her, they shout Lena some un polite words, they also say that Lena is a freaking girl who has a bad magic. Her friends also say that she comes from a black magic family. That makes her become angry, then, she pulls out her magic. All things have broken, such glass flying, the window shatters out of nowhere. People who are around her are screaming frighten, even some of them jump up from their seats. And finally, they go out from the room. We can see in the following statements:

“Glass went flying, splintering into the air, as the window shattered out of nowhere-the window right across from out row in the classroom, right next to where Lena stood, sharpening her pencil.

(24)

dove out of their seats. That’s when I realized what that creaking sound had been. Pressure. Tiny cracks in the glass, spreading out like fingers, until the window collapsed inward like it had been pulled by a thread. It was chaos. The girls were screaming. Everyone in the class was scrambling out of their seats. Even I jumped. Lena wasn't. She was standing by the broken windows, surrounded by glass, looking panic-stricken. Her face was even paler than usual, her eyes even bigger and greener. Like last night in the rain. but they looked different. They looked frightened. She didn't seem so brave anymore”. (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl,2013 : 59)

A. Types of magic in this novel is Al-Hawatif and Al-Junun. a. Al-Hawatif

This kind of magic makes a person get nightmare whole his life. When he’s in sleeping, he feels that there is a sound that calls and then he wakes up, he hears the sound of conversation when they are exposed to the magic will be dreaming of the loved ones.

This witchcraft exists in the novel, before Ethan met with Lena in school, Ethan often dreams figure. Almost every night Ethan is awakened by dreams of the same mysterious figure, on his first day back to school Ethan meets with Lena Dunchannes, Lena likes a women in his dreams. Such a picture can be seen in the following statement:

I was back in the drea. I saw her hand. I saw my hand grabing at hers, my fingers digging into her skin, her wrist, in a desperate attempt hold on. But she was slepping; I could feel it, her fingers pulling through my hand.“Don’t let go!”. I wanted to help her, to hold on. More than I had ever wanted anything, and then, she fell

(25)

Lena Duchannes. It was you in the dreams. And the song. The weird song on my iPod. (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl,2013 : 44) b. Al-Junun

This mystic makes a person forget about their affection and love for someone they love. This mystic makes people feel something like amnesia.

This witchcraft exists in the novel when Lena’s birth day in 16th years. In 16th years old the witch can decide her fate, whether she becomes a good or bad witch. When she is 16th years old, she will get a great power. However, to get the power, she has to lose the people who love her. She does not want to lose Ethan because she knows Ethan love her so much, therefore she makes a mystic so that Ethan loses all of love feeling about her.

Such a picture can be seen in the following statements:

“I was almost relieved it was Saturday. There was something comforting about spending the day with women whose only magical powers were forgetting their own name.” (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl,2013 : 332)

“What is that, like an after-school special? The orange peel came off in one long spiral. Your girlfriend thinks I’m special, dude. “Fries were falling out of his mouth. Lena looked at me. Girlfriend. We both heard him say it. Is that what I am? Is that what you want to be? Are you asking me something?. It wasn’t first time I’d through about it. Lena had felt like my girlfriend for while now. When you considered everything we’d been through together, it was sort of a given. So I don’t know why I had ever said it, and I don’t know why it was hard to say it now. But there was something about saying the words that made it more real.” (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl,2013 : 366)

(26)

4. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

4.1Conclusions

After description of the Mystic in Beautiful Creatures, the writer concludes that all mystics are important to be studied, because we can know all about mystic.

The writer found, there are two types of mystic in this novel include: 1. Al-Hawatif

This kind of magic makes a person get nightmare whole his life. When he’s in sleeping, he feels that there is a sound that calls and then he wakes up, he hears the sound of conversation when they are exposed to the magic will be dreaming of the loved ones.

This witchcraft exists in the novel, before Ethan met with Lena in school, Ethan often dream figure. Almost every night Ethan awakened by dreams of the same mysterious figure Until finally, on his first day back to school Ethan met with Lena Dunchannes, Lena like a women in his dreams.

2. Al-Junun

This mystic makes a person forget about their affection and love for someone they love.

(27)

power, she has to lose the people who love her. She does not want to lose Ethan because she knows Ethan love her so much, therefore she makes a mystic so that Ethan loses all of love feeling about her.

The mystics of the novel revolve around love. Lena is a magician, while Ethane is a normal human, they are in love. First, Lena refused Ethan to be her boyfriend, but persistence and attitude of Ethan make Lena falling in love.

To being a witch is not easy for Lena, but she has confidence with Ethan, she can finish the problems experienced.

4.2Suggestions

After writing the paper, the writer suggests that it’s very important for reader and writer to know the type and mean of mystic. The mystic which is found in the novel Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl support to each other. Writer knows this paper has many mistakes, therefore writer hopes any advices from all the readers to make this paper perfect.

Summary of Beautiful Creatures

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Wate lives in Gatlin, S.C., but dislikes his small town and would like to move away. He lives with his father and a housekeeper/grandmother to Ethan; his mother has passed away.

On the first day of his sophomore year of high school, Ethan again has a dream about falling through trees with a girl whose face he can't see. This dream has been recurring for months, and it troubles Ethan because in the dream he loves the girl he is falling with, though he does not know who she is. When Ethan wakes, he finds a new song by an unknown artist on his iPod. The song is called "Sixteen Moons," and the lyrics seem eerie to Ethan. When he checks his music player later, the song is missing.

When Ethan arrives at school, he hears about a new girl in town, Lena Duchannes. Lena is ignored by most of the students because she wears long dresses and is not interested in popular pursuits like trying out for the cheerleading squad. Ethan hears Lena playing the song "Sixteen Moons" on her viola in orchestra, which unsettles him. Ethan drives away from school to clear his mind, and he hears "Sixteen Moons" playing over his car radio. As Ethan drives, he nearly runs over Lena. When he stops his car, he suddenly realizes that Lena is the girl who appears in his nightmares. Lena accepts a ride home from Ethan, which marks the start of their friendship.

In English class the next day, Ethan begins to hear Lena communicating with him telepathically. The girls in class insult Lena's reclusive uncle, Macon Ravenwood, and Lena's anger affects the classroom, shattering the glass in the windows. Lena runs home to Ravenwood Manor, and Ethan follows her. Lena is crying in a garden full of lemon trees, and she begins to talk with Ethan. She says that sometimes unexplainable things happen around her. Suddenly, Ethan touches an old locket that is sitting on the ground, and he begins to see a vision of the past. In the vision, a girl named Genevieve is watching her mother's plantation, Greenbrier, burn down. This happens during the time period surrounding the Civil War. Lena is interested in Ethan's vision, but she cryptically warns him that her life is complicated and that he should not try to interact with her again.

Ethan keeps the old locket with him and asks his three great aunts, known as the Sisters, about it. The Sisters tell him that the locket comes from the year when General Sherman burned every plantation in Gatlin, except for Ravenwood Manor. The Sisters identify the two sets of initials, which are carved into the locket, as belonging to an ancestor of Lena's — Genevieve Duchannes — and an ancestor of Ethan's named Ethan Carter Wate. In church, Ethan touches the locket and has another vision of Genevieve Duchannes talking with her fiancé, Ethan Carter Wate. That night, Ethan has another dream of Lena slipping away from him, and he dreams he was drowning and wakes up soaking wet.

does not want to give Ethan additional information about the locket, and Ethan notices that the interior of Ravenwood Manor seems to be magical, because the interior decoration can change and entire meals can appear and vanish, seemingly according to Macon's will.

That night, Lena comes to Ethan's house and sneaks into his room to explain her unusual family. She says that all the people in her family are Casters (spell casters) who have special powers. Despite this revelation, Ethan's attraction to Lena grows, and he asks her to go on a movie date with him. They hold hands at the movie theater, which sparks rumors about Ethan and Lena at their high school.

Ethan soon meets Lena's older cousin Ridley, a seductively dressed and very persuasive girl. Ridley invites Ethan to the Gathering, a holiday dinner held by Lena's extended family every year. Ridley reveals that in five months, Lena will turn 16, and on 16th birthdays, all members of the Duchannes family are Claimed as either Light Casters or Dark Casters. After the dinner, Ethan sits in Lena's bedroom as Lena explains that Ridley is a Siren, a Dark Caster with the ability to persuade people to do anything she wants. Lena is afraid that she will become evil as Ridley is and be claimed as Dark on her upcoming birthday. Ethan assures her that will not happen, and he kisses Lena for the first time.

That night, Ethan wakes up and sees that his housekeeper, Amma, leaving the house. Ethan follows Amma to her own home, where he watches as she goes out to the swamp and meets Lena's uncle, Macon Ravenwood. Macon is upset that

Amma has not stopped Ethan from meeting with Lena, as it could be dangerous for both teenagers. Amma and Macon have questions they want to ask the ghosts of Amma's relatives, whom she refers to as the Greats. The ghosts are uncommunicative, and Macon and Amma are unaware of Ethan's presence at their meeting.

The next day, Lena and Ethan skip school and touch the locket again. This time, they see a vision of Genevieve Duchannes tending Ethan Carter Wate's bullet wound just before he dies. They go to the Gatlin County Library to get information from Marian Ashcroft, a librarian who was Ethan's mother's best friend. At the library, they have one more vision of Genevieve trying to bring Ethan Carter Wate back to life by using a magical text called the Book of Moons. Marian Ashcroft reveals herself to be a Keeper, a mortal who knows about the Light and Dark Casters and keeps a record of their doings. There is a secret part of the Gatlin Library known as the Caster Library, and Lena thinks this place may contain the Book of Moons. However, in order to search for the book, Lena and Ethan must wait for the Caster Library to open, according to its own magical schedule.

On Halloween night, Ethan wakes up from a vision that Lena is in trouble. He drives to Ravenwood Manor and goes inside to find Lena lying on a table, with most of her family members standing around her. Lena is in pain, and her

Arelia, concludes that Ethan's love is the only force that can protect Lena from the schemes of Sarafine.

On Thanksgiving, Amma invites Lena to Thanksgiving dinner with the Wate family. Amma uses magic to suspend time so she and Lena can talk to each other while the family sits by, frozen and unaware. Ethan can overhear their conversation, as Amma tells Lena that Sarafine is actually her mother.

Ethan and Lena go to the Caster Library. In the library, they touch Genevieve's locket again and discover the source of the curse on the Duchannes family of Casters. Genevieve used the Book of Moons to work dark magic and bring Ethan Carter Wate back to life, and the Book gained the power to choose which of the Duchannes children would go Dark or Light in the future. In the library, Lena faints and is again spiritually attacked by Sarafine, but she wakes up when Ethan kisses her. Ethan and Lena need to find the Book of Moons, and they think it might have been buried with Genevieve. They go to Genevieve's grave and dig up the book. Then they study it to see if they can find a way to keep Lena from becoming Dark.

At Gatlin High's winter formal, some of the girls ruin Lena's dress by pouring liquid soap on her and Ethan. Lena's cousin Ridley arrives at the formal and takes revenge for Lena's humiliation by mentally turning on the sprinkler system in the school. The water ruins the dresses of all the girls who were mean to Lena, causing chaos. The mothers of the mean girls believe Lena is responsible for the incident, and they sign a petition to have Lena expelled from school. The

school principal holds a hearing and is about to expel Lena when Macon arrives to protest the hearing. Lena is allowed to return to school.

Over Christmas break, Ethan discovers that his reclusive father, Mitchell Wate, has not been working on his novel for the past several months. He has been sitting in his study, grieving for his dead wife. In Mitchell's study, Ethan and Lena notice that several books are open to certain pages, and the pages refuse to be turned. Some magical influence is spelling out a code in the books, and the message tells Lena, Claim yourself. Lena and Ethan continue to search through the Book of Moons, looking for a magical option that will allow Lena to choose her own fate.

The day of Lena's 16th birthday, Ethan goes to Ravenwood Manor to see her. Her extended family of Light Casters is with her. Lena is surprised when her Dark Caster cousin Ridley comes to the house with Ethan's best friend, Link, and several other students from the high school. Ridley has put a verbal spell on the students who used to be mean to Lena so that they will treat her nicely on her birthday. Other students are setting up a big party for Lena in the field outside of Ravenwood. Macon forbids Lena to attend the party because of the potential dangers, but Lena sneaks out to enjoy the festivities anyway. Lena and Ethan dance together and finally say that they love each other.

to release Mitchell from her spell. Ridley reveals that this was a plot to lure Ethan away from Lena, since his love is her main protection from Sarafine. Ethan and Link head back to Ravenwood Manor and meet Link's mother, Mrs. Lincoln, on the way. Ethan discovers that the woman is not Mrs. Lincoln, but the Dark Caster Sarafine in disguise.

Sarafine tells Lena that she will be able to Claim her own self for the Dark or Light at midnight. Lena's choice is a complicated one: If she chooses to go Dark, all the Light Casters in her family will die, but she would be able to have a physical relationship with Ethan, something that was barred to them. If she chooses to go Light, all the Dark Casters in her family will die, including Uncle Macon. Ethan is unable to get into Ravenwood Manor to get the help of the other Light Casters, so runs to the Caster Library to get help from Marian, who is able to let him into Ravenwood Manor through the Library tunnels. After gathering the Light Casters, Ethan runs to find Lena in the woods, but instead meets Sarafine, who stabs him in the stomach with a knife.

From Lena's point of view, midnight strikes, and Lena uses her power over nature to block out the moon at midnight, which keeps her from being claimed at all, either for Dark or Light. She sees Sarafine stab Ethan, so with the help of Amma, who arrives with the Book of Moons, she decides to recite a spell to bring Ethan back to life. This works, but with the terrible consequence of the Book needing to take the life of Uncle Macon in order to save Ethan. In the days after
