3.7.3 Post-design Survey

1. Validating the materials Evaluation and revision are needed in this design, in order to know whether the materials are appropriate for the learners and the objectives of the learning or not. The researcher decides to use two types of validating materials. First, the designer uses questionnaires to evaluate the materials in order to obtain criticism and suggestions on the designed materials academically and un- academically. The researcher asks several respondents to give the input, suggestions and criticism. Second, the researcher conducts a pilot application. It is conducted to observe how the teaching learning activities use the designed materials. The result of the pilot project would be a contribution to create a final revision of the designed materials. 2. Revising the materials Revising materials provides the most appropriate ones for the learners based on their needs. Some adjustment is done if it is needed. Those research procedures can be illustrated in figure below: Conducting needs’ survey Pre-design survey Formulating the goals, topics and general purposes Pre-design survey Selecting the type of syllabus and developing the syllabus Pre-design survey 53 Selecting subject content Pre-design survey Developing the materials Validating the materials Post-design survey Revising the materials Post-design survey Figure 3.1: Research Procedures

CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS

AND DISCUSSION This chapter discusses the result of the study. The steps of development have been stated in the previous chapter. The first part of this chapter consists of the result of need analysis, the process of designing materials, the materials validation which consist of validating materials by distributing the questionnaires and interviewing the respondents, continued by giving preliminary application and materials revision.

4.1 The Result of the Research

There were two kinds of surveys that the writer conducted. The first one was pre-design survey. It was done before designing materials in order to get information about the learners’ interest. The survey was done by giving questionnaires and interviewing the learners. The second one was post-design survey which was done after researcher designed the materials to collect some suggestions, critics and comments about the designed materials. 4.1.1 The Result of Pre-design Survey 4.1.1.1 Conducting Needs Survey The first step of this study was conducting needs survey. This step was intended to get the target needs in learning English. The target needs suggested by Hutchinson and Waters include necessities, lacks and wants from the learners. It would be the basis to design the materials development. 54
