4.1.1.2 Stating Goals, Topics and Objectives

The goals, topics in this study were decided based on the learner’s need.

4.1.1.2.1 The Goal

The goal of this study was to design English materials for concierge personnel in a five-star hotel, boutique-hotel or diamond-hotel to develop their English skills, so they can be helped to speak communicatively from the exercises that are provided.

4.1.1.2.2 The Topics

To design the materials which suit the learner’s needs, the writer conducted a survey about a number of topics needed by the concierge personnel to support their job. They chose their own 18 topics, that supported the demands of their job and the result of the needs analysis, using questionnaire from 16 personnel. In conclusion all of them 100 need topics that deals with giving information about hotel activities, places of interest, hotel facilities, local crafts, responding to guest’s complaints and information about villager’s activities. They were 15 personnel 93.75 who need topics which deal with giving information about Indonesian culture, historical places in the past and information about local food. There were 14 personnel 87.5 need topics that deals with offering services to the foreign guests, giving information about special souvenirs and places of interest using English. Only 13 personnel 81.25 need a topic on how to make a request, 6 personnel 37.5 who chose the topic on how to give 60 directions politely, 4 personnel 25 who chose how to tell the time, 3 personnel 18.75 who chose how to tell price and number and only 2 personnel 12.5 who chose how to greet someone politely. Based on the result of the percentage above, the concierge personnel chose only 14 topics. So, the writer decided on the 14 topics, that have been already chosen, as the materials which were presented in the 8 units of the designed materials. They were: 1. Dealing with guest complaints. 2. Giving information about historical places in the past. 3. Giving information about hotel facilities. 4. Giving information about Indonesian culture. 5. Giving information about local dances. 6. Giving information about villager’s activities. 7. Giving information about special souvenirs. 8. Giving information about places of interest.
