4.1.2.Firstness In this category, the data are based on the character that comes first in conversation, female or male characters. The data derive from both picture and text. However, the textual data are only taken from conversation since it is easy to determine and analyze which character speaks first in a dialogue. Then, related to pictorial data, the way to analyze is the same as in textual data. In this case, the character speaking first is indicated from the dialogue box or character‟s expression in the picture. Again, to have effective explanation, the results in firstness category will be presented the same as in number of female and male category. It means that one table and figure present the results of two textbooks which are under the same title. ERC becomes the first title to demonstrate, as seen in Table 4.6 Table 4.4: The Number of Firstness in ERC Book Unit Female Male Total Numbers Percentage Numbers Percentage A 1 5 31.3 11 68.8 16 5 5 62.5 3 37.5 8 10 13 50 13 50 25 Total A 23 46 27 54 50 B 2 7 35 13 65 20 7 9 75 3 25 12 12 10 45.5 12 54.5 22 Total B 26

Table 4.4 shows that male characters have more initiative to speak first in the conve rsation, as seen in the ERC‟s total number and percentage. It confirms that male characters had 55 52.9 chances to speak first. Meanwhile, female characters had 49 47.1 chances. The difference was not quite high, which was 4.8 6 characters. Generally, the trend of firstness in ERC depicts that female and male characters tend to have initiative to speak first. However, the pattern in each textbook also had to be analyzed in order to discern the real depiction. Figure 4.3 illustrates the numbers of firstness in ERC in each unit in textbook. Figure 4.3: The Comparison of Female and Male Firstness in ERC According to Figure 4.3 , the charts‟ height fluctuated. The pattern of firstness in Book A and B extremely varied since the height of the charts of both female and male characters fluctuated wildly. Sometimes, female characters had most initiative to speak first, as seen in Unit 1 68.8 and Unit 7 75. It happened either for male characters, as seen in Unit 5 62.5 and Unit 2 65. Besides, the female and male characters also have the same chances to speak first in conversation, as seen in Unit 10. Both characters had the same number and so did the percentage. Both characters had the same chances to speak first in conversation. In addition, the difference in Unit 12 was still tolerable, which was only 10. 31,3 62,5 50 46 35 75 45,5 48,1 47,1 68,8 37,5 50 54 65 25 54,5 51,9 52,9 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 Unit 1 Unit 5 Unit 10 Total A Unit 2 Unit 7 Unit 12 Total B Total ERC Female Male It can be said that the average number and percentage of ERC in total does not represent the depiction and trend in each textbook and unit. The tolerable difference in ERC is a result of varied and fluctuated numbers of female and male characters. Therefore, it cannot be merely said that female and male characters to have almost the same initiative to speak first in conversation. Then, in EH, the data can be discerned in Table 4.5 and Figure 4.4.
