Text 1.
ST6030 I looked at Jamie, then up to the ceiling and around the room,
doing my best to keep my composure, then back to Jamie, again. She smiled at me and I smiled at her and all I could do was
wonder how I’d ever fallen in love with a girl like Jamie Sullvian.
1TTF1 Aku menatap Jamie lekat-lekat, menengadah kelangit-langit dan
memandang kesekeliling ruangan, berusaha sekuat tenaga menahan emosiku. Kutatap Jamie lagi. Ia balas tersenyum
gadis seperti Jamie Sullvian.

The data above show that F1 and F2 promote powerlessness. F1 adds “Ya
Tuhan” in the middle of the sentence. It shows that the translation consists of powerle
ssness and the words “Ya Tuhan” mean submisive to God. F2 also shows promoting powerlessnes
s. F2 translates “I could do” into “yang bisa kulakukan hanya”. The Indonesian word “hanya” shows that there is no alternative anymore,
thus he Landon gives up on something and says the only thing that he could do to Jamie. Therefore, there is no portrayal of power or autonomy by the female
translators. On the other hand, the male translators’ translations show the power. M1
shows the autonomy and ability of Landon to think himself. M1 t ranslates “I
could do ” into “ada dibenakku”. It shows the autonomy of male through the
emphasis of his ability to think himself , proven by the word “benakku” in the TL
which shows self-reliance. In other words, the translator shows that Landon is able to think by himself
without submitting to God. M2 translates “I could do” into “yang ku lakukan”. It does not show the sense of powerlessness because the
sentence in the TL does not show any limitation of choices with the word “only” or “hanya” just like in F2.

You know it’s love when all you want to do is spend time with other person, and you sort of know that the other person feels the
same way.
17TTF 1
