that investigate and observe all aspects about communication that happens with some signs and sign system.
This thesis focuses on the symbols that hidden and have deep meanings that potrayed in the novel as words and pictures. So in analyzing the thesis, the writer
uses intrinsic approach to analyze structure of the text and context of the text itself.
3.2 Data and Source of Data
Source of data is collected from the novel that entitled Angels and Demons by Dan Brown published by Pocket Books. In the process of collecting data, the
writer divides the data into two, primary data and secondary data. The primary data is taken from words, phrase, sentences, actions, dialogue between characters or some
quotation that related to symbolism in Angels and Demons novel. The secondary data is taken from articles, thesis, movie or another sources that supported to the
topic, symbols. The writer collects the data from the movie, entitled Angels and Demons. On may 15 2009, a film adaptation was released directed by Ron Howard
and based on the novel itself, Angels and Demons by the same name of the novel.
3.3 Data Collecting
Some steps that the writer starts to collecting the data : 1. Reading the novel Dan Brown, Angels and Demons several times in order get
full understanding about what the story is and watching the film, Angels and Demons to get more explanations about the data.

2. Identifying some symbols that hidden in words, phrase, sentence, dialogue in the novel.
3. Analyzing the data based on related books concerning to the subject matter.
3.4 Data Analysis
When all the data and information relates to the topic are collected. The analysis will be started by:
1. Analyzing the context of text that related to symbolism by observing words, sentences , pictures and dialogues in the novel. And they have another
meaning that stand for something else. 2. Indentifying the real meaning of each symbols that portrayed in the novel.
These analysis are referred to the intrinsic element by Kasim Razali. In analyzing the data, the writer uses intrinsic approach. It focuses on the work itself, the text.
Because from the text It can analyze the source data of the thesis. Because the source data comes totally from the novel, Angels And Demons. And using semiotic method
to interpret the real meaning of a symbol. Semiotic is the theory of the production and interpretation of meaning. Pierce 1870 says semiotic is :
The sign as a triadic relations as something that stands for something, to someone in some capacity. The type of relation
that holds the sign relation together as icons and symbol. A symbol is a sign that denotes its object sorely by virtue of the
fact that it will be interpreted to do so. The symbol consists in a natural or conventional or logical rule, norm, or habit that
lacks dependence on
the symbolic sign s having a resemblance or real connection to the denoted objects.

After analyzing the data, the writer makes a conclusion for this thesis. Here are the steps of analyzing data as it can be seen from table 3.1.
1. The first step is researcher observes the novel Angels And Demons by Dan Brown and the movie.
2. Find the text related with the main topic about symbolism such as dialogue or quotes
3. Analyze the data selected and interpreted by descriptive qualitative method and semiotic method.
4. The last, make a conclusion.
