CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses the background of the study, the statement of the problems, the
purposes of the study, the significance of the study, the scope and limitation, and the definition
of the key terms.

1.1 Background of the Study
Language is a tool for our communication. It means that humans need it to interact or
communicate with others in their daily life. Without language, people will feel difficult to
understand and to communicate with each other ‘Language is, of course, the central object of
study in the linguistic sciences, but the term covers several rather different concepts which need
to be carefully distinguished’ (Trask, 1999: 138). So, it helps us create our social words and
labels the meanings we ascribe to people, things and events.
In Indonesia, when people speak usually they use more than one language. They are
Indonesian, as national language, and regional languages like Javanese, Sundanese, Maduranese,
etc. Also English as International Language. So Indonesian people can be called as Bilingual and
Multilingual society. According to Trask

(1999: 30), ‘Bilingual or multilingual is the ability

to speak two languages and there is good reason to believe that bilingualism or multilingualism
has been the norm for most human beings at least for the last few millennia’.

In bilingual and multilingual society, there are two kinds of code: code switching and
code mixing. Both of them are used by many people to express their thoughts, ideas, knowledge,

and to make their communication more understandable, more simple, etc. Wardhaugh (1986:1)
states, ‘When two or more people communicate with each other in speech, we can call the
system of communication that they employ a code’. When they mix of their sentences between
one language to another language in the conversation, it is called code mixing. According to
Wardhaugh (1986: 103), ‘Code mixing occurs when conversant use both languages together to
extent that they change from one language to the other in the course of a single utterance’. In
conclusion, it is clear that code mixing is a mixture of word, phrase, and clauses of several
languages. It means that code mixing occurs when a speaker uses a certain language in his
communication: however, he inserts some pieces of another language.
The main function of language is to communicate people and another. It means that in
communication, people always use the language. So, language and communication are related.
Another function of language is to get relationship with another. According to Trudgill (2000:1),
‘Language is not simply a means of communicating information about the weather or any
subject. It is also a very important means of establishing and maintains relationship with other
people’.
There are two kinds of communication; they are oral and written communication.
Written communication is a process of sending and receiving through press such as; letter,
newspaper, book, etc. Oral communication is a communication which entails talking using the
spoken word, such as talking face-to-face, on a telephone, on a dialogue, etc. It can be through
visual aid or broadcasting media such as radio and television.
Television as a tool of visual communication has grown fast in Indonesia today. It is one
of the tools of mass communication in electronic media. Television becomes a need for people
because watching television is often done by people to refresh and relax their mind. Besides, by
watching television people can get many informations that they need. The information include
about many things, such as; sport, news, education, etc. Television has some channels, such as;

TVRI, RCTI, INDOSIAR, SCTV, TRANS 7, TRANS, etc. TRANS is one of the channels that
show many interesting programs, such as; news, movies, quizzes, talk show, etc. There are
bilingualism phenomena in talk show programs, such as; Bukan Empat Mata, With Farah Quinn,
Gaul Bareng Bule, Ala Chef, etc. The presenters use two languages when they present the
programs. One of the programs is Ala Chef.
Ala Chef is one of the famous programs broadcasted by TRANS. The program is actually
presented in Indonesia language, but sometimes the presenter also uses English word or phrase.
This programs has beautiful presenter, the name of this presenter is Farah Quinn. In addition,
Farah Quinn usually has some guest stars in Ala Chef Program to make some foods or cookies.
The writer found that automatically she uses code mixing in her conversation.
Based on the background of study above, the writer is interested to analyze code mixing
with the title “An Analysis of Code Mixing Used by the Presenter of Ala Chef Program on
TRANS Television”. In this study, the writer focuses on the code mixing that the writer found in
the conversation used by the presenter of Ala Chef Program.

1.2 Statements of The Problem
Based on the background of study, the research problems are formulated as follows:
1.

What are code mixing used by The Presenter of Ala Chef program on TRANS
television?

2.

What kinds of code mixing used by The Presenter of Ala Chef program on TRANS
television?

1.3 Purposes of the Study
Based on the statements of the problem, the purposes of the study are:
1.

To know the code mixing used in Ala Chef Program.

2.

To describe kinds of code mixing used in Ala Chef Program.

1.4 Significance of the Study
It is expected that the result of this study gives some contributions for students of English
Department, English Teachers and lecturers.
The contribution for English Teachers and lecturers of English Department is getting
broader knowledge about code mixing. Furthermore, they also get additional references of code
mixing. For the students not only to know about code mixing but also get additional references
of code mixing. It is also hoped that this study may be used by other researchers as a reference
and will encourage them to carry out similar studies.

1.5 Scope and Limitation
This study focused on code mixing used by the presenter of Ala Chef Program on
TRANS Television. Meanwhile, it is limited on two languages, Indonesian and English code

mixing and the kinds of code mixing used by the presenter of Ala Chef broadcasted on Saturday
and Sunday at 10.15a.m until 11.00 a.m.
