INTRODUCTION

Chapter I of this research discusses background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and the definition of the key terms.

1.1 Background of The Study

Language is the most effective tools of communication. People use language in their lives to communicate with their friends. Language is media to express the thoughts, feelings, knowledge and experiences. When two or more people communicate with each other in speech we can call the system of communication that they employ a code, in most cases that code will be something we may also want to call language (Wardhaugh, 2006:1).

Indonesia is one of bilingual countries. People who live in bilingual country tend to use two various languages in communication to each other. So, that condition force them to learn more than one language. In general as human being people are nearly always faced with choosing an appropriate language when they speak, because of that many people mix up two or more languages. Most of them are having two or more languages, namely their native language and second language as English. People, then, are usually required to select a particular code whenever they choose to speak, and they may also decide to switch from one code to another or to mix codes even within sometimes very short utterances and thereby create a new code in a process known as code-switching (also called code mixing) (Wardhaugh, 2006:101).

(2)

2

Codemixing in Indonesia has developed since a long time ago. Started by the coming of foreigners such people are likely to be immigrants, visitors, or children of ‘mixed’ marriages who use English in their communication. Indonesian people were initiated to use English and then to spread it out to the others. For example, we often hear Indonesian people when they speak the Indonesian language interspersed with the use of the English language. This condition is called code mixing because the condition where people use more than one language in the same topic. People in Indonesia use code mixing between Indonesian language and English in certain condition, it makes them easier to understand each other in communication. One of the language phenomenon especially in the study of bilingualism problems is called code mixing(Holmes, 2001:35).

Actually, code-mixing occurs both in spoken and written communication. The phenomenon of code-mixing can also be found in TV programs, novels, and magazines. The language which is commonly mixed is English. In this case, the writer will choose one kind of television program as an object of the study, which is

Just Alvin. It is one of entertaining programs broadcasted by Metro TV. Just Alvin is

a talk show program that give inspiration to the viewer and give value of life from the guests. Generally, the guests come from celebrity communities. The program is actually presented in Indonesian language, but sometimes the presenter and the guests combine different languages to make a sentence which is known as code mixing. This Program contain a lot of code mixing present by the presenter and the guests.

Based on argument above, the writer focuses on process of combining words, called code mixing. It is often spoken by the presenter and the guests of Just Alvin .

(3)

Therefore, the reseacher is interested to analyze code mixing with the title “Code Mixing used by the presenter and the guests of Just Alvin Program on Metro TV “

1.2 Statement of The Problem

To clarify background of the study, the writer gives two question that relate to the problem:

1. What English code mixing utterances are used by the presenter and the guests

of Just Alvinprogram on Metro TV?

2. What types of Englishcode mixing are used by the presenter and the guests of

Just Alvinprogram on Metro TV?

1.3 Purpose of The Study

The purpose of the study is formulated follows:

1. To know the code mixing utterances used by the presenter and the guests of

Just Alvin program on Metro TV.

2. To clasify types of code mixing that used by the presenter and the guests of

Just Alvin program on Metro TV.

1.4 Significance of The Study

The result of this study is expected to give contributions to students of English Department, English teachers, lecturers and the viewer of this program.

The contribution to lecturers, students, and for future researchers is getting broader knowledge about code mixing in linguistic subject. Furthermore, they also

(4)

4

get additional references of code mixing. For students not only to know about code mixing, but it also hope that this study may be used by other researchers as a reference and will encourage them to carry out similar studies.

The contribution for viewer of this television program, that this study can help the viewers to understand meaning and know the variation of code mixing that found in this program. So they have more understanding about code mixing.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on code mixing used by the presenter and the guests of “Just Alvin” program on Metro TV. It is limited on two languages, Indonesian and English code mixing and the types of code mixing that are used by the presenter and the guests of Just Alvinprogram on Metro TV. It tooks one episode of Just Alvin program on July 13,2014 broadcasted on Sunday, 20.30 – 21.30 WIB. Topic of this episode was “Myself and I” and the guests were Nirina Zubir, Poppy Sovia, Jessica Iskandar, and Marchella Lumowa. The reason why the reseacher choose these program as data source is because this program contain a lot of code mixing in the dialogue which are mostly used by the presenter and the guests.

1.6 Definition of Key Terms

To avoid misunderstanding, the key terms in this study are defined as follows: 1. Code : is any kind of system that two or more people employ for

(5)

person as when someone devisesa private code to protect certain secrets(wardaugh 2006 :88).
