U n l i k e t h e s l o w e r r e v o l u t i o n s o f t h e past, s u c h a s t h e industrial r e v o - lution, this r e v o l u t i o n is t a k i n g p l a c e v e r y q u i c k l y a n d a f f e c t i n g e v e r y f a c e t of o u r lives. Inherent in this rapid transformation isa host of managerial and social problems:

According to Gartner.com, the MSS share of the computer industry, i n c l u d i n g e m b e d d e d s y s t e m s a n d b u s i n e s s i n t e l l i g e n c e , are e x p e c t e d t o g r o w at a 2 0 % c o m p o u n d a n n u a l g r o w t h rate, r e a c h i n g o v e r $1.5 b i l l i o n in 2 0 0 6 ( p e r Lurhq,

2 0 0 3 ) , a n d s o their i m p a c t m a y b e substantial. S e p a r a t i n g t h e i m p a c t o f M S S f r o m that o f o t h e r c o m p u t e r i z e d s y s t e m s i s a diffi- cult task, e s p e c i a l l y b e c a u s e o f t h e t r e n d t o w a r d integrating, o r e v e n e m b e d d i n g , M S S w i t h o t h e r c o m p u t e r - b a s e d i n f o r m a t i o n systems. T h e r e i s v e r y little p u b l i s h e d i n f o r m a - t i o n a b o u t t h e i m p a c t o f p u r e M S S t e c h n o l o g i e s b e c a u s e t h e t e c h n i q u e s are f r e q u e n t l y

W e r e c o g n i z e , h o w e v e r , that M S S t e c h n o l o g i e s d o h a v e s o m e u n i q u e implica- tions, w h i c h are h i g h l i g h t e d t h r o u g h o u t t h e r e m a i n d e r o f this chapter. Figure 15.7 p r e s e n t s a f r a m e w o r k that s h o w s a c o m p l e t e m a n a g e m e n t s y s t e m . Such a system stays in equilibrium as l o n g as all of its parts are unchanged. If there is a major c h a n g e in o n e of the c o m p o n e n t s or in the relevant e n v i r o n m e n t , the c h a n g e will probably affect s o m e of the other c o m p o n e n t s . T h e major c h a n g e stimuli (relevant to M S S ) are strategy and technology, e s p e c i a l l y w h e n c o m p u t e r i z e d s y s t e m s such as a

O n e o f t h e major c h a n g e s n o w o c c u r r i n g i s t h e e m e r g e n c e o f t h e W e b a n d its impact o n M S S (Sikder and G a n g o p a d h y a y , 2 0 0 2 ) and t h e relationship o f D S S and k n o w l e d g e m a n a g e m e n t . ( H o l s a p p l e 2 0 0 3 ) . B o t h are r e l a t e d t o t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n a l transformation. I n f o r m a t i o n t e c h n o l o g y plays a major role in supporting this change,

especially s o m e intelligent systems. T h e impact of c o m p u t e r s and M S S t e c h n o l o g y c a n be divided into three general categories: organizational, individual, and societal. C o m p u t e r s h a v e had an impact on organizations in m a n y ways. We c a n n o t possibly c o n s i d e r all of t h e m in this chapter, and so we have s e l e c t e d the topics we f e e l are m o s t relevant to MSS.

C o m p u t e r t e c h n o l o g y h a s already c h a n g e d our world, and m u c h m o r e c h a n g e is anticipated. I n a d d i t i o n t o t h e e f f e c t o n i n d i v i d u a l s , t h e r e are significant s o c i e t a l effects. Table 15.4 summarizes s o m e of the major areas of social impact and lists the sections in which they are discussed.
