CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the method of the study, the research design, and operation of the study. The purpose of this chapter is to ensure the validity of the process that leads to the development of the actual model of self-actualization language learning. The logical truth in the theoretical framework should be validated with the actual development of the model.

A. METHOD

In this part one finds the research goal, selected method, and method concept of the study.

1. Research Goal and Selected Method

The goal of this study is to produce a model of self-actualization English language learning. The concept, design and procedures of the model are later expected to be applied to the design products of the RD undergraduate thesis. The initial model developed is a theoretical one its framework is found in Theoretical Framework in Chapter II, and an empirical model, the product of which is in the form of a set of guidelines and its attachments, is presented. 59 The method used in this study was educational Research and Development RD, a process used to develop and validate educational products. Borg and Gall 1983 state that the goal of RD is to develop the research knowledge and incorporate it into a product that combines educational research and educational practice rather than to discover new knowledge.

2. Method Concept

The stages of development in this study basically used the model developed by Borg and Gall, The following are the ten steps developed by Borg and Gall 1983 that have often become the umbrella of many learning design developments. Step 1: Research and Information Collecting Step 2: Planning Step 3: Developing preliminary form of product Step 4: Preliminary field testing Step 5: Main product revision Step 6: Main Field testing Step 7: Operational product revision Step 8: Operational field testing Step 9: Final product revision Step 10: Dissemination and implementation This 1983 model was simplified in the 4-D Model by Thiagarajan, Semmel, and Semmel Defining, Designing, Developing, and Disseminating, which was used as the basic frame in the theoretical framework of this study discussed in the second part of Literature Review. In this chapter the writer tries to ensure that the theoretical model developed in Theoretical Framework is in line with the umbrella of RD methodology. 60 The writer describes how his own theoretical model fits in with the “classical”, standard R D steps above, especially with the first five steps.
