Attention to Language and Behavior.

87 The teachers‟ comments showed that the teachers did not judge the students‟ writing but the teacher tried to analyze the students‟ ideas. The teacher asked the student to be more correctly in writing because the teacher found many errors on student‟s writing. Then, the teacher also used this belief to ask the student in order to recognize the ideas better. In addition, the teacher also asked about unclear part such as the comparison and the subject on students‟ writing. The last, the teacher also makes sure about the reason of student‟s writing. A nonjudgmental stance means that the teacher cannot judge his or her teaching process in classroom. The teacher had to appreciate the students‟ effort in following teaching process in the classroom. Teachers gave written feedback with a nonjudgmental stance to motivate and appreciate the students‟ achievement in classroom.

5. Attention to Language and Behavior.

The most common teacher‟s belief centered on giving written feedback was the attention to language and behavior. Gebhard and Oprandy 1999, pp. 10- 13 state that attention to language and behavior is very important because in the use of language, especially in dictions, the teachers have to avoid vague language in teaching. The vague language can influence their teaching behavior because the same words can give different meaning for different people. Vague language can lead to the miscommunications in teaching. Therefore, the teachers have to deliver their teaching materials clearly in order to avoid misunderstanding or miscommunication in teaching. This belief was 88 underlying the practice on giving written feedback. The teachers were demanded to give clear, specific, and meaningful feedback to students‟ writing. There were the examples of teacher‟s belief in attention to language and behavior. Table 4.18 The Examples of Teacher’s Belief 5 No. Beliefs Teachers’ Comments 5. Attention to language and behavior. - Be more meticulous in grammar and more specific in vocabulary next time yaa.. - This is similar with the intro above. What‟s the purpose? - Over generalization. The specific words were used in teachers‟ written feedback. The first example to show this belief was “Be more meticulous in grammar and more specific in vocabulary next time yaa..” The teacher asked the student to improve the grammar and use specific vocabulary in writing an essay. The researcher found that the teacher has a attention to language and behavior because grammar is one of important parts in writing. Moreover, the specific grammar is also needed to avoid misunderstanding between the writer and the reader. The teacher also used this belief to indicate the similar part in the writing that can create confusion for reader. Then, the teacher asked the purpose of the similar part to make it clear. Attention to language and behavior also given to “over generalization” because the teacher asked the student to focus on their topic. The topic gave limitation for the discussion to obtain the main points in the student‟s writing. The teachers in Critical Reading and Writing II Class used this belief to give more attention in the use of language that can affect the student‟s behavior in writing an essay. 89
