Research Findings Discussions

B. Research Findings Discussions

1. The Common Response of the Research Problem

The formulation of the problem in this research is “Is there significant effect of using Elkonin Boxes Strategy towards the students’ ability in reading skill at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Idanogawo in 2015/2016? ”

The main problem of this research is to know whether the students have ability in reading skill when they are taught by using Elkonin Boxes Strategy. The researcher hopes the students are able to read English in well.

Based on the testing hypothesis, we can see that there is a significant effect of using Elkonin Boxes Strategy in reading skill. By this strategy, the students can prove their reading skill in English and make the students more active, competitive, and cooperative in studying English.

2. The Analysis and Interpretation of the Research Findings

The researcher gives the pre-test to the students in Grade VII-B as the experimental group of the research before doing the treatment. This pre-test is done to know the students’ ability before doing the treatment and to find out the normality sample in order that it can represent the population. This pre-test is done on April,

22 th 2016. And based on the computation in the Appendix 16, it shows that the group comes from the normal distribution.

After analyzing the result of the pre-test, the researcher gives the post-test to the students April, 26 th 2016. Based on the Appendix 8 and Appendix 10, the researcher finds that the mean score of the students’ achievement in pre-test is 38.5 which is stated fair level and the mean score of the students’ achievement in post-test is 83 which is stated good level.

Furthermore, the researcher examines the hypotheses based on computation of the data and the researcher found t count = 6.33 and t table was 2.002 with n=30 and the

significant level is 5% (0.05). Since t count >t table , it means H a is acceptable and H 0 is unacceptable. It concluded that there is a significant effect of using Elkonin Boxes Strategy towards the students’ ability in reading skill at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Idanogawo 2015/2016.

From the descriptions above, it can be concluded that the using of Elkonin Boxes Strategy made the students can practice their reading skill and they more active in say words into English. In other side, this strategy gave a significant effect to the students’ ability in reading skill.

3. The Research Findings versus the Late Related Research

The using of Elkonin Boxes Strategy in reading skill had not ever been research before, but one of the late related researches was assessing the Students’ ability in reading skill by using Elkonin Boxes Strategy searched by Srina (2009) has searched the students’ ability in listening skill by using Elkonin Boxes Strategy at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 20 Jakarta Timur. In doing her research, she used Elkonin Boxes Strategy in teaching listening skill. In her research, she found that the use of Role Play Strategy can develop the students’ ability in listening skill.

Based on the explanation above, the researcher took conclusion that learning reading is very important to the students to make them able to master English well.

Therefore, the English teacher should be able to support the students in mastering reading by using interesting strategy in teaching and learning processes.

4. The Research Findings versus Theories

After getting the result of the research, the researcher wants to compare it with the experts’ theories used in this research. According to Shedon (2009:8) affirms that

Elkonin Boxes Strategy is an instructional strategy used to build phonological awareness by segmenting words into individual sounds. Secondly, Jean (2009: 4) defines that, “Elkonin Boxes Strategy is a simple and quick way to teach phonemic awareness. it means that Elkonin Boxes Strategy is Strategy which is can helps the students to segmenting words into individual sounds in order that their orally passages can understood by the listener.

Based on the opinions above we concluded that Elkonin Boxes Strategy is as a reading skill strategy that helps students to be able to comprehend a printed text with able to segment words and hear individual phonemes in words.

In conclusion, the research finding of this research based on the expert opinions above is true when the researcher do this research. In the research, researcher focuses on by using Elkonin Boxes Strategy especially in asking and giving opinion.

5. The Research Findings Implication

The research finding proves that there is a significant effect of Elkonin Boxes Strategy towards the students’ achievement in reading skill. This proof can be seen from the mean of the students’ achievement before Elkonin Boxes Strategy is 38.5 while the mean of the students’ achievement after applying Elkonin Boxes Strategy is

83. In other words, the result of the students’ achievement in post-test is better than the students’ achievement in pre-test. Based on the research finding, the researcher gives an implication that the English teacher can use this Strategy to increase the students’ achievement in reading ability since Elkonin Boxes Strategy lets the students enjoy the opportunity to practice reading skill in English with other students since the students work in pair, they encourage their partner.

6. The Analysis of Research Findings Limitation

As a scientific research, this research also has some limitations as follows:

a. The result of the research motivated the students to read English text effectively.

b. It gave the benefit contribution for the teachers to use this strategy in transmitting the lesson to the students, particularly in increasing the students’ ability in reading skill.

b. The research instrument to collect the data is less perfect.

c. The researcher does not have any experiences in conducting the research and in analyzing the research finding since the researcher is a beginner in this research.

d. The researcher has some weaknesses and limitations to apply Elkonin Boxes Strategy in the teaching-learning process.

e. The research finding is less satisfactory since the researcher analyzes it alone without the help from others. If the researcher involves the other people, the research finding will be sufficient.
