Based on the explanation above, in this research, the writer wants to analyze Marley and Jenny Grogan by using factors underlying of the relationship’s of Robert S. Feldman to support the theme and the writer’s purposes to discover those deeper meaning of the film through the theory.

B. Focus of the Study

The writer would like to limit the research to analyze factors of the underlying relationship on two main characters’ of film Marley and Me and applying interpersonal attractions of Robert S. Feldman.

C. Research Questions

According to the background of study, the writer concentrates and limits it by formulating the research questions as follows: 1. What characteristics are showed in the two main characters in the film Marley and Me? 2. What factors of the underlying relationship are viewed by Robert Feldman’s concepts?

D. Significance of Study

The writer hopes that the research can be useful for the readers who are interested in the film-field especially for those who want to know about the factor of relationship between human and non-human as their friend. Meanwhile, the writer xiv also wishes to understand and to trace of meaningful the characterization of the two main characters of the film entitled Marley and Me by John Grogan.

E. Research Methodology

1. Objective of the study The objective of study is to identify the factor of the underlying relationship of the two main characters in film by John Grogan through the concept of Robert Feldman about factors of underlying the relationship. 2. Method This research applies qualitative method; in this research the writer will describe the collected-data. Data are selected by watching the film, reading the scripts, noting some important data and browsing internet. 3. Technique of Data Analysis In this research, the writer uses psychological analysis. First, the writer chooses the object that will be analyzed. Then, the writer takes relationship case between the two main characters and the dog, Marley. After that, the compiled data will be analyzed by using descriptive analysis technique. And it will be supported by related-references. 4. Unit of analysis The unit of analysis is film Marley and Me written by John Grogan published 2008. xv 5. Instrument of study The instrument of the study is the writer herself. The writer as the subject of the research is watching the film, reading some references, collecting and writing some data to finish this thesis. And also examining the theory of Robert Feldman is Interpersonal attraction approach Social Psychology. xvi
