Method and Design of the Research Instrument Technique of Data Collection Technique of Data Analysis

∑ ∑ After all data are calculated, the last procedure is determining df degree of freedom, with formula: df = N x + N y - 2 The value of significant, α = 0,05 5

G. Statistical Hypotheses

H o : μ A ≤ μ B It means that if t o ≤ t t , story mapping technique is not effective to improve student’s reading ability in learning narrative text. H a : μ A μ B It means that if t o t t , story mapping technique is effective to improve student’s reading ability in learning narrative text. 30

CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDING

A. Data Description

The data were collected from the results of students’ scores of pre-test and post-test in both experimental class and controlled class. The followings are the description: Table 4.1 The Students’ Scores of Experimental Class X Student Pre-test Post-test Gained Score 1 55 85 30 2 60 70 10 3 55 55 4 65 85 20 5 80 85 5 6 55 75 20 7 55 80 25 8 35 70 35 9 50 80 30 10 70 80 10 11 65 80 15 12 75 95 20 13 35 70 35 14 50 65 15 15 50 80 30 16 55 60 5 17 70 55 -15 18 65 80 15 19 55 60 5 Student Pre-Test Post-Test Gained Score 20 85 75 -10 21 70 85 15 22 70 65 -5 23 55 75 20 24 50 75 25 25 40 70 30 26 65 75 10 27 45 75 30 28 70 55 -15 29 25 70 45 30 90 90 31 40 65 25 32 65 70 5 33 65 75 10 34 30 55 25 35 60 65 5 36 45 70 25 ∑ 2070 2620 550 Mean 57.50

72.78 15.28

As mentioned in the table, it can be clarified that the mean score of pre-test in experimental class was 57.50, while the mean score of post-test was 72.78. In addition, the mean of gained score post-test – pre-test was 15.28 72.78 – 57.50. It means that there was a significant difference between the students’ achievement of pre-test and post-test.
