CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter presents the conclusions of the study and the writer’s suggestions to English teacher and other researchers.

A. Conclusion

The study aims at designing English writing instructional materials using English movies for senior high school grade ten. Two problems were formulated in this study. First problem was about how English writing instructional materials using English movies were designed. Second problem was about what English writing instructional materials using English movies looked like. To answer those problems, Research and Development cycle and instructional design by Kemp were combined into five steps. They were research and information collecting, planning, developing preliminary form of product, preliminary field testing, and product revision. In research and information collecting, the students’ need analysis was conducted to obtain information about the students’ necessities, lacks, and wants. The questionnaires were distributed to the students of SMA K Sang Timur in form of open and closed ended questions. Besides, the interview was conducted to the English teachers to gather the information about teaching-learning activities in Sang Timur Senior high school. In this step, the syllabus, the competency standard, basic competencies, topics, and indicators were developed. In developing preliminary form of product, the subject content and teaching-learning activities and resources were developed to design the materials. Two English movies and two videos were applied in the study. The consideration of cutting the movies and or videos depended on what students had to know. Editing the movies and videos also considered about the genre of text and its generic structure. Besides, it depended on the teacher’s decision whether they wanted to watch the whole movie or not. In addition, English movies and videos applied in the study could be downloaded from the Internet site. Task-Based Learning was applied in the materials. There were four subject contents used in each unit. There were Let’s Get Started, Let’s Discuss It, Let’s Write, and Let’s Review. In preliminary field testing, the questionnaires were distributed to two English teachers of SMA K Sang Timur Yogyakarta and three English lecturers of Sanata Dharma University. According to the data, the respondent agreed that the competency standard, basic competencies, and the indicators were well formulated. The designed materials were suitable and appropriate for the students grade ten. Four of the respondents agreed that the activities were relevant with the topic in each unit. They also agreed that that the activities in each unit were well elaborated and gave the opportunity to the students to improve their writing skill. Four of the respondents agreed that the instruction in each unit was clearly enough. The time allocation was suitable in each unit. The movies or videos were suitable for the students of grade ten and relevant with the topic in each unit. The subtitle of each movie or video could assist the students to understand the content. The respondents agreed that generally, the movies and videos could motivate the students to produce good writing. They also agreed that the designed materials were well arranged. In conclusion, the designed materials were appropriate and suitable for the students grade ten. Some opinions, suggestions, and expectations were given by the teachers and lecturers in order to revise and improve the designed materials. The materials that were intended to the students of senior high school grade ten consisted of four units. In unit one, the students would learn about narrative text. The topic of unit two was recount text. The students would learn descriptive text in unit three. And the topic of unit four was news item. The materials will be an innovation for the teacher in teaching English writing. The materials provide several movies and videos in order to assist the students to develop their ability in English writing. The activities will easily help the students to actively participate in the classroom activities. In conclusion, the materials give advantages to the teacher and the students.
