Cech – Connelly BIOGRAPHIES

Cech, Eduard (1893–1960) Czech mathematician who contributed to DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY , COMBINATORIAL TOPOLOGY , and HOMOLOGY THEORY .

Ceva, Giovanni (1647–1734) Italian mathematician who also worked in economics, mechanics, and hydraulics. Ceva was professor of mathematics at the University of Mantua in Italy. His most important work was in geometry with the discovery of CEVA ’ S THEOREM .

Chasles, Michel (1793–1880) French geometer who made a fortune in banking before devoting his life to mathematics. He studied the

CROSS RATIO and made significant contributions to ANALYTIC GEOMETRY and was professor of mathematics at the École Polytechnique in Paris.

Chern, Shiing-Shen (b. 1911) Chinese-born mathematician who studied in China, Germany, and France before coming to the United States. He has made many important contributions to DIFFERENTIAL TOPOLOGY , DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY , and theoretical physics. He is now professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley.

Clairaut, Alexis Claude (1713–65) French mathematician who studied CALCULUS , the CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS , DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS , and GEODESICS on QUADRICS . At age 18, he was the youngest person ever elected to the Paris Academy of Sciences. Using calculus and Newton’s law of gravitation, he was able to compute the Moon’s orbit and predicted the 1759 return of Halley’s comet.

Shiing-Shen Chern (UC Berkeley)

Clifford, William Kingdon (1845–79) English mathematician who studied NON - EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY , CURVATURE of space, and Hamilton’s QUATERNIONS . He is noted for his work on the non-Euclidean spaces known as Clifford-Klein spaces and the topology of spaces of CONSTANT CURVATURE .

Connelly, Robert (b. 1942) American geometer who is a leading researcher in the study of the rigidity of FRAMEWORKS . He is a professor at Cornell University and in 1977 discovered a

closed, simply connected polyhedral surface that is not rigid.

Connes – Dantzig

Connes, Alain (b. 1947) French mathematician who founded the study of NONCOMMUTATIVE GEOMETRY . Connes has a joint appointment at Ohio State University and at the Institute des Hautes Études Scientifiques in France. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1983 for work on HILBERT SPACES and operator algebras and the Crafoord Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 2001 for his work on the theory of operator algebras and for founding noncommutative geometry.

Conway, John (b. 1937) British mathematician now living in the United States who has contributed to many areas of

mathematics, including abstract algebra, NUMBER THEORY , game theory, combinatorics, KNOT THEORY , and geometry. A creative mathematician with penetrating insights, Conway is the inventor of surreal numbers, TANGLES , and the game of Life for computers. There are many mathematical concepts named for him, including the Conway group, the CONWAY CRITERION , and the CONWAY WORM . He is a professor of mathematics at Princeton University.

Coxeter, H. S. M. (1907–2003) Canadian mathematician who was a great leader and teacher of geometry. He was born and educated in England and became a professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto in 1936, where he was professor

John Conway

emeritus. Coxeter made major contributions to the study of

(Robert Matthews)

polyhedra in higher dimensions, NON - EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY , GROUP THEORY , and combinatorics.

Cramer, Gabriel (1704–52) Swiss mathematician who is known today for Cramer’s rule for solving a system of linear equations. Cramer received his doctorate at the age of 20, then accepted a teaching position in Geneva that allowed him to travel widely and continue his study of mathematics.

Dandelin, Germinal (1794–1847) French-born Belgian mathematician and engineer who discovered the DANDELIN SPHERES that are tangent to the plane determining a conic at the focus of the conic.
