h. Teaching Writing in Junior High School
English in Indonesia becomes popular and important, so that the government obligates the subject to be taught in all stages of education.
Teaching English in junior high school is very important since it is one of compulsory subjects. Besides that, teaching English in Junior High School
is aimed to teach the students to achieve the functional stage, it means the students have to be able to use English to overcome problem in daily life
communication both orally and written. Students of junior high school are required to understand the nature of writing and produce various functional
text, monologues, and essays in the form of procedure, descriptive, recount, narrative, and report. Regarding to the text types, students of grade VIII deal
with descriptive, narrative, and recount text. Teaching writing in junior high school is based on the school based
curriculum KTSP. The curriculum contains standard of competence and basic competency that should be achieved in each semester. Standard of
competence and basic competency is developed based on the KTSP that is based on standard of contents and standard of graduate competencies
Depdiknas, 2006. Below is the table of standard of competence and basic competency of writing in junior High School in the first semester.
