Kane et al in Attardo 1994: 325 define decommittment as denying any harmful intention for an action and for the speaker to declare that she does not
have any intention of maintaining or carrying out or treating seriously an action that has been initially started. Decommitment is only performed twice in the
findings analyzed by the researcher. Police

to a patient’s wife
Dr. Addison : Well, nothing like a domestic dispute to liven up a pre op, huh?
Datum 51 Datum 51 occurs in a patient room when the doctors and nurses prepare
for a n operation. Due to the suspicion of the doctor to the patient’s wife which
might be the one who shot her husband, the doctors call police. Then, the police come and take the patient’s wife. Because of the crowded of polices in the
patient’s room, Addison as the one who does not know what has happened comes and asks a question using an overstatement by saying an exaggeration that it can
be a domestic dispute to liven up pre-op. The medication process called “pre-op” means pre-operation here said in
the sentence to create a humor to the other doctors at that room. Therefore, the function is decommitment using the probing tactic. It is a function of humor in
which a speaker can get information by making a humorous utterance. Addison wants to know what happens, so she says humor as an attempt to discover
information. The other example of decommitment is presented in the following dialogue.
Dr. Grey : The healing ritual. Are you OK with that?
Patient : Yeah. They cant find my soul if Im medicated. No pain,
no gain, right?
Datum 59 There is a patient who has to do a healing ritual before getting an operation
because of her family believe. Grey asks to the patient whether she is okay about the healing ritual. The patient convince Grey using a cliché “No pain no gain” as a
statement that is usually said to endure pain and pressure to achieve the price of hard work. This humor is categorized as transformation of frozen expression for
applying a cliché in creating the humor. It also has the function as decommitment in order to get agreement from the doctor. It belongs to a probing tactic for
making a humorous utterance to get information.
