Dr. Grey : The healing ritual. Are you OK with that?
Patient : Yeah. They cant find my soul if Im medicated. No pain,
no gain, right?
Datum 59 There is a patient who has to do a healing ritual before getting an operation
because of her family believe. Grey asks to the patient whether she is okay about the healing ritual. The patient convince Grey using a cliché “No pain no gain” as a
statement that is usually said to endure pain and pressure to achieve the price of hard work. This humor is categorized as transformation of frozen expression for
applying a cliché in creating the humor. It also has the function as decommitment in order to get agreement from the doctor. It belongs to a probing tactic for
making a humorous utterance to get information.
c. Mediation
Humor is used either to introduce or to carry out potentially embarrassing or aggressive interactions. In short, humor is seen as a mediating device Mulkay
in Attardo, 1994: 327. An example of medication is presented in the following utterance said by the characters.
Dr. Bailey: Are we saving lives or having a tea party? Walk faster.
Datum 23 While walking to the pat
ients’ room to examine them, the interns have a chit chat behind Bailey about the close relationship between Izzie and Karev.
Bailey as the resident of the interns, irritated to their noise which are not proper to be talked when in working hour. Therefore, she often gives order and even yells at
them.
This sarcastic humor happens when the interns are having chit-chat behind her instead of starting their works. Thus, she critics them to focus on works.
Meanwhile, “Saving lives” is categorized as medication process. It has the same
meaning as work, and the function is mediation to carry out potentially aggressive interactions. This following is another example of mediation.
Dr. Richard : Im chief of surgery. This is not a request.
Dr. Derek : With respect, in this case, Im not your subordinate, Im
your doctor.
Datum 29 Richard who has been operated because of brain tumor insists to join the
operation. Since Derek is his doctor in operation, Richard should asks him first. However, Derek refuses the order of Richard to let him do surgery because he still
need to take a rest. Richard still insists on it, therefore he emphasizes that he is the chief of surgery and Derek as his subordinate who works for him have to obey
him. It can be seen that Richard uses the hospital position to get what he wants.
On the other hand, Derek which can be lost by Richard stubbornness refuses in a sarcastically respecting answer. Thus, this humor belongs to sarcasm. There are
two hospital position Derek emphasized “subordinate and doctor” to reject Richard request. Moreover, mediation is the humor function in order to carry out
the potentially aggressive interactions between Richard and Derek who try to overwhelm each other by emphasizing the position in hospital. The other example
below is presented as the last example of mediation function found in the findings.
Dr. Grey: Hes a brain surgeon. How can he be so brainless?
Datum 54
The utterance in Datum 54 is stated by Grey when she has been broke up with Derek as he choose his wife Addison rather than Grey. This hurt and painful
feeling of this incident are still left in Grey’s mind. There is a word play between “brain surgeon” as a position in a hospital and brainless which means stupid. Grey
emphasizes that it does not make sense for Derek, as a brain surgeon who always deals with the illness in brains, being brainless for choosing Addison. Therefore,
this humor belongs to sarcasm as a form of verbal aggression, and the function is mediation.
According to the explanation of findings above, medical terminology which is called medical terms is employed through the characters’ utterances and
the narration by the conversation of the characters in Grey’s Anatomy Season 2,
particularly when they are working in the hospital. This medical term, then, also illuminates the style of humor by being applied in various types of humor
depending on the partner they talk to and the intention. The basic kind of medical terms also can be put on the humor between a doctor and patient’s conversation in
order to step closer to patients, relieve the anxiety, do critics and minimize the different background of them resulting to the three function have been found by
the researcher. In analyzing the types of humor, from the three types of humor i.e. jokes,
spontaneous conversational humor, and unintentional humor, the findings shows that unintentional humor cannot be found. It is quite hard to create nonverbal
humor as in the accidental word playing or pun humor since the characters are quite serious in working. Therefore, there is no unintentional humor that leads to
the absence of defunctionalization function. Meanwhile, jokes of medical terms occur just three times and show the closeness to the patient, therefore the function
or purpose belongs to social management. On the other hand, not all of the sub- types of spontaneous conversational humor are applied in the conversation as
there are only 9 kinds of spontaneous conversational which can be analyzed that also support the employment of the function of humor. Therefore, the function of
humor using medical terms depends on the types of humor chosen as the way of how the characters show their thought, feeling, and even anger.

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter is divided into two sections. The first part of this chapter is conclusions as the summary of the research findings and discussion. Based on the
findings of three objectives of the research which are to find out the medical terms used to create humor, to identify the types of humor using medical terms, and to
explain the functions of humor using medical terms in Grey’s Anatomy Season 2
TV series, the researcher draws the conclusions. In the second section of this chapter, the researcher presents several suggestions for the students of linguistics,
readers in common, and also future researchers.
A.
Conclusions
This research investigates humor using medical terms performed in Grey’s
Anatomy Season 2 TV series. Based on the findings and discussion in Chapter IV,
some conclusions can be drawn related to the formulation of the problems and objectives of the study stated in Chapter I. Finally, they are stated as follows.
1. In relation to the first objective of the research, there are 5 kinds of
medical terms employed by the characters to create humor in Grey’s Anatomy
Season 2 i.e. disease, medicine, hospital position, anatomy, and medication
process. From the findings in Chapter IV, it can be seen that all of these medical terms are applied. These terms are not only uttered for a serious work situation but
also in a humor creation. Moreover, the characters who employ medical terms mostly are doctors and nurses.
