Potensi wisatawan mancanegara kepada sektor pariwisata kota Medan telah dikaji.
Beberapa faktor yang memberikan pengaruh terhadap permintaan pariwisata
man can eg ara d i kota M ed an ad alah ju mlah wisatawan man can eg ara, ju mlah
p e n g e l u a r a n w i s a t a w a n ma n c a n e g a r a , p e n d a p a t a n p e r k a p i t a r i l l w i s a t a w a n
mancanegara, kurs valuta asing, kebijakan pemerintah dalam promosi pariwisata.
Analisis dalam penelitian ini menggunakan aplikasi model teori permintaan double
logaritma natural yang diproses dengan metode Ordinary Least Square (OLS). Data
penelitian menggunakan data skunder, berasal dari berbagai surnber, dalam runtun
waktu penelitian dari tahun 1981 sampai 2001.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa semua variabel yang diamati adalah sesuai
dengan tanda-tanda pada hipotesis kecuali variabel kebijakan pemerintah dalam
promosi pariwisata. Tujuan utama wisatawan asal Malaysia dan Singapura merupakan
kunjungan bisnis dan liburan, sedangkan wisatawan asal Belanda dan Taiwan untuk
liburan dan melihat peninggalan sejarah.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa promosi pariwisata yang di program
oleh Pemerintah Indonesia kurang berhasil, sehingga disarankan kepada tenaga
pengelola wisata serta tenaga pelaksana di kalangan industri pariwisata maupun
instansi terkait beserta seluruh masyarakat Indonesia untuk meningkatkan d a n
m e n d u k u n g c i t r a w i s a t a I n d o n e s i a y a n g m a mp u b e r d a y a s a i n g d i p a s a r
internasional.

Analysis of Factors Influence Tourism Demand in Medan
Keyword: Tourism Demand, Tourism Policy, Foreign Tourists
The potential of tourism of one country has been evaluated. In this research, the
factors that influence the demand of tourists from abroad in Medan are the numbers
of tourists, expenditure of tourists, percapita income of tourists, and government
policies in promoting the tourism.
The analysis of this research is using the double logarithm natural demand
function and it is preceded by Ordinary Least Square method. The data is from
various publications such as Statistic Bureau of Indonesia, and Bank of Indonesia, during
1981 until 2001.
The result of this research find that all variable are significantly influenced the
demand of tourism of Medan except the policy government on tourism. The foreign
tourists that come to Medan have different destinations. Most of Malaysian and
Singapore go to Medan for business and vacations, while Netherlands and Taiwanese for
vacation and visiting historic buildings.
This research also finds that the tourist program of Indonesia Government is not
very successful. It is suggested for all of tourism industries in Indonesia, tourism
department of Indonesia and Indonesian people have to promote and back up the
tourism of Indonesia so that tourism of Indonesia has a competitive advantage world wide.
