6. The Biblical Concept on the Origin of Sin in strengthening understanding of

The White Witch’s position as the expression of Devil in Christianity. In the novel, Lewis not only imposes the biblical idea of The Devil in the creation of the White Witch as the symbolization of vicious supreme power, he also exploits the biblical idea of the origin of sin within her to strengthen understanding of The Witch’s position as the expression of Devil in Christianity. As it is said above, Aslan has to call all of his creatures in a council as he notices that it is needed to create a plan for keeping Narnia safe from the arrival of evil there, as it is said “ For though the world is not five hours old an evil has already entered it”p.130. The Narnians find the concept of evil new for them as it is the day when they have just been created. They do not understand what evil means as it is stated by Narnians “What did he say had entered the world?—A Neevil—What’s a Neevil? No, he didn’t say a Neevil, he said a weevil—Well, what’s that? p.130”. From the quotation, it can be seen how confused they are with the concept of evil so that they say it in a wrong way. Therefore, this moment is totally their introduction to this concept. As it has been known, the evil refers to about the White Witch who is waken by Digory as he rings the magical bell in Charn. By the use of the magical ring, he also brings her along as they go to Narnia. This means Digory is described by Aslan as the one bringing the first evil into the new world of Narnia as it is said: “You see, friends, that before the new, clean world I gave you is seven hours old, a force of evil has already entered it; waked and brought hither by t his son of Adam p.148.” As a consequence of his action, Aslan asks him to undo the wrong doing that he has done in Narnia by sending him in a mission to look for the magical apple tree which can be used as Narnia ’s protection from the evil Witch p.154. As we know, the image that the Witch has as evil strengthens her position as the symbolization of the vicious supreme power. The way how Lewis creates a story to introduce the concept of evil entering new-born Narnia is in some way like the Bible’s story on the same account. First, it is a possibility that Lewis associates Digory with Adam; the first man God creates, due to their correlated role as the one charged with bringing the first evil into the new-created world. Adam’s role in bringing the origin of sin can be seen from the Apostle Paul’s writing explaining how sin entered the world through one man as it is said in Rome 5:12: “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned —”. This story may refer to the story when Adam commits sins with hiz wife by ignoring god’s law not to eat the fruit from the the tree of the knowledge of good and evil Genesis 3. The reason for associating Digory and Adam may also be caused by the verse using man as the portrayal of Adam. Therefore, Lewis also chooses Digory who is a male bringing sin into Narnia. To make the relation more visible Lewis uses the term Son of Adam to introduce Digory to all of his creations. However, the concept of the origin of evil was not only conveyed through the story of Digory and the White Witch. This concept can be seen as well from Mr.Ketterley as the symbolization of the vicious part of human beings. It has been explained in the previous part, that one of the ways the reader can see his viciousness is by his idea to kill Aslan on a purpose to make Narnia the resource of prosperity for him. This imagery is consistently expressed in the novel as in the statement “If only we’d had a gun” p.118 and “The first thing is to get that brute shot” p.120. This repetition becomes a hint of the significance of those statements that the readers need to know. As it is said by the Roman 5:12, death comes as the consequence of sin. This idea in that verse is the one Lewis used to correlate him with Adam in the way both bring death into the newly-created world. Mr.Ketterley, in fact, does not bring death by action, yet by bringing the concept of death with him by the image of the gun he wants to use to kill Aslan. From this case, the concept of the origin of sin is exposed within the symbolization of Mr.Ketterley. From the way Lewis introduces the biblical concept on the origin of sin seen through the way Digory brings the White Witch to Narnia and also how Mr.Ketterley introduces the concept of death, it can be seen how Lewis’ Christianity influences the production of his literary work.
