The Apple Tree Magic

the notion of the deplorable word to convey magical power of the Witch. To realize that even after the Witch still has the power after being woken by Digory with the same disastrous effect, the author is likely to put her supreme power in a significant position. Furthermore, the author also uses some specific emphasis to describe the supreme power of the Witch which even tends to be hyperbolic seen from the statement like and “as if they were made of silk” and “no heavier than a doll”. These emphasizes show the author’s intention to portray her supremacy. In addition, those descriptions actually give the image of negative characteristics which suits with her vicious character. At last, it is also stated that symbol can be recognized by looking at the recurring pattern. In this case, it can be seen that there are also some occurrences where the author puts in an explicit way the conflict between good and bad power which is represented through Aslan and the White Witch. From this elaboration, it can be seen that the author puts into an important place on the notion of binary opposition; vice and virtue.

c. The Apple Tree

The Apple Tree is the next manifestation of Magic being physically described in the form of tree. Its magical power is shown by its ability in giving protection from evil, power and immortality, and also healing. Furthermore, the tree possesses such a charm which makes everyone to be enchanted in such a way to acquire those tree’s abilities although by stealing. Although the tree has all those qualities, it is also created by a magical order p.171, stating that: Come in by the gold gates or not at all, Take of my fruit for others or forbear, For those who steal or those who climb my wall, Shall find t heir heart’s desire and find despair p.171. The tree strictly forbids everyone to steal it or to use it for their-own personal matters. As a consequence, the notion also explicitly states that the thieves may get their desire; every ability the tree possesses, yet it will just send them into despair. The author, however, does not only show the magical power of this tree through those abilities. He creates the setting where the tree exists in such a way that the reader can know directly how sacred it is for its magical power. This is explicitly stated by Digory as he enters the garden: You never saw a place which was so obviously private. You could see at a glance that it belonged to someone else. Only a fool would dream of going in unless he had been sent there on very special business. Digory himself understood at once that the others wouldn’t and couldn’t come in with him p.171. As it is stated in the quotation although there is not any inhabitant in that area, it is said that any person will find at a glance that there is someone or something possessing the garden and everything within. It is likely to be an indescribable object but its power can be felt easily and tangibly. In this case, the magical power of the tree starts to be introduced to the reader. Not only the self-description, yet the author also creates a magical event for Digory as he wants to enter the gate of the garden. At that moment, as Digory lays his hand in them, the magic makes the gate instantly swing apart. The magic of the tree, as it is said before, is also revealed from the supernatural abilities the tree possesses. The first ability is protection revealed through Aslan’s command to Digory for making a journey to find the tree. Aslan intends to plant the seed of the tree so that it can protects Narnia from the dangerous threat of the White Witch p.155. It is because as the tree flourishes, the White Witch is said to never come down to Narnia for its smell, which is joy and health to Narnian, is death and horror and despair to her p.189. The second ability is to give power and immortality. This is what is pursued by the White Witch as she looks for something giving her everlasting greatness. Therefore, she decides to ignore the notion, steal, and eat it. In addition, as she is trying to make D igory’s mission for Narnia fail, she also tries to encourage him to eat the apple for the sake of immortality and power, as it is written: You simpleton Do you know what that fruit is? I will tell you. It is the apple of youth, the apple of life. I know for I have tested it; and I feel already such changes in myself that I know I shall never grow old or die. Eat it, Boy; and you and I will both live forever and be king and queen of this whole world —or of your world, if we decide to go back there p.175. However, as it is stated before “for those who steal or whose who climb my wall shall find their heart’s desire and find desire “. This magical caution really happens to the white witch as she is ignoring it. Although she has gained her desire to be stronger, more proud, and in some way more triumphant, her face turns into deadly white which is as white as salt. The third ability is healing power. It is what Digory wants to pursue as he is looking for a medicine to heal his beloved his sick mother. This is seen mostly from the Witch statement that: Do you not see, Fool, that one bite of that apple would heal her? You have it in your pocket. We are here by ourselves and the Lion is far away. Use your magic and go back to your own world. A minute later you can be at your Mother’s bed- side, giving her the fruit. Five minutes later you will see the color coming back to her face. She will tell you the pain is gone p.176. This attraction really hits his innermost desire to see his mother healed. However, it arises in him such a dilemma as he really wants to bring that fruit back home, yet he is also afraid of the threat from the notion of not stealing the tree. Fortunately, he makes a true choice by ignor ing the Witch’s offer. As he succeeds in bringing the apple to Narnia Aslan gives him the apple and since he gets it in a good way so it can heal his mother as it can be seen from Aslan’s statement that “ What I give you now will bring joy. It will not, in your world, give endless life, but it will heal” p.191. Aslan’s statement ensure the tree ability to heal. At last, the tree is said to possess such a charm which makes the people to be attracted in such a way so that they are willing to eat the fruit even though they realizs that it is against the order. This is felt by Digory as he finds the apple. It is said that the apple has such a good shine and smell which creates in Digory such thirst and hunger to taste that fruit. It is likely that the apple tree has some kind of supernatural attraction which will put everybody to be put under its control. The control is exposed as Digory starts to forget the caution that he once saw, about how the magical experience he once had. This attraction causes him to make a justification where he can achieve his desire, as it is written: “Could it be wrong to taste one? After all, he thought, the notice on the gate might not have been exactly an order; it might have been only a piece of advice —and who cares about advice? Or even if it were an order, would he be disobeying it by easting an apple? He had already obeyed the part about taking one “for others” p.172. From the quotation above, we can see that Digory’s attraction is not an ordinary one as a normal human being has since his desire for the apple tree has let him be blinded to the caution he once read. He lets himself to be completely deceived by his temporary desire, so that he ignores every responsibility that he may get after eating the apple. Therefore, it can be seen that his attraction is under the control of the magic possessed by the apple tree. This fact is even stated explicitly by Digory saying “And it just shows that you can’t be too careful in these magical places”p.173. Through the explanatio above, it can be seen that the author has described so many concrete abilities that the tree possess to symbolize of the attraction. If we examine further, those abilities; immortality, power, and healing is something that attracts humans at most to possess. To describe this number one attraction, therefore, the author also uses the notion of Magic to describe the tree. It has been elaborated further that Magic is used to define something which is at a supreme or high level. Therefore, it can be said that the tree can give anything that everyone needs to get or wants to achieve at the highest level. Furthermore, the notion of Magic also gives the emphasis that the tree possesses a supreme power which can attract everyone who sees it. In addition, to discover that the author directly uses Digory and the Witch Witch; which may be the symbolization of male and female, child and adult, and human and supernatural beings, may lead to understanding that those attractions are something everyone in general needs without any specific classification, Therefore, it can be said that the magical apple tree is the symbolization of attraction. As we said done earlier, symbol can be found by looking at the detail that can be clues to interpret the symbol. In discussing the magical apple tree before, it is seen how the author includes very comprehensive details leading to our ideas on everything that human being ’s need. Furthermore, the author also emphasizes those details into emphasis as he explicitly creates the setting to be in a way magical too. Therefore, although the reader has not seen the magic tree, they have been led to know that the tree is indeed magical. In addition, the author also creates a repeated event to show how that tree can attract everyone without any exception. From those devices, the tree theoretically is also justified as the symbol of attraction.
