Invitation-Refusal The Types of Dispreferred Second Turns Found in
Philomena :
Martin :
Mine wakes up before I do. I‘m having a ham and Swiss cheese omelette
– shall I get you one?
I.. No. I just... I’m not hungry.
22OR1,9,1200:50:09 This datum shows the dispreferred second turn of an offering which is
followed by a refusal as the response. A first pair part is an offer which is expected to be responded by an acceptance as a second part. In this dialogue, Philomena informs
Martin about what the restaurant serves as the breakfast menu. She then says that she has a ham and Swiss cheese omelet as her breakfast and offers Martin to get him the
same breakfast as she has. Yet, Martin performs a second part by perfor ming ‗no‘ and
explains why he does not want it. Martin‘s action is considered as an act of refusal. Furthermore, a dispreferred second turn of an offer which leads to a refusal
could also be performed by stating a direct refusal. The example is shown in a conversation between a Hostess and Martin below.
Hostess :
Martin :
Champagne or Buck‘s Fizz? No, thank you.
19OR1200:41:24 This dialogue occurs on a plane where Philomena and Martin took to go to the
U.S.A to find her lost son. When they already sit in their seats, a hostess comes to them and offers to both Martin and Philomena if they want to drink Champagne or
Buck‘s Fizz as the welcome drink. In respond to that, Martin refuses the offering by politely saying ―No, thank you‖.
