CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses background of the study, the statements of the problems,
and the purpose of the study, the significance of the study and the definition of the
key terms.

1.1

Background of the Study
Literature is very important for human life. Basically, literature is human

expression. So it is true that literature is one of the important parts of human life.
Literature and human beings cannot be separated each other because they are
interrelated. Human not only beings can express their feelings but also they can get
valuable and useful knowledge by learning literature.
According to Eagleton (2003), there have been various attempts to define
literature. People can define it, for example, as “imaginative” writing in the sense of
fiction-writing which is not literally true. Furthermore, literature (Hartiningsih: 2001),
is human expression which sketches their problems, struggle of life, or even the
conflict and something considered to be difficult to understand. It often attempts to
convey something important about life. It means that literature can give the lesson
about real life to the readers.
There are some literary works which can be elaborated into deep analysis; they
are novel, short story, poetry, and drama. Drama is one of the literary works which
contains dialogues presented by the actors, or actresses on the stage in front of the
1

2

audience. Further, Macmilan(1984:734) said that drama is a play performed before an
audience by actors and actresses on a stage. Film is the development of drama. It also
contains dialogues that tell about a certain story presented by actors and actresses.
Moreover, film is one of the media that contains sounds, animation, pictures,
stories, etc. (Wardani: 2006) besides, film is a form of entertainment that enacts a
story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement. It means
that film is a form of entertainment which tells about the story presented by using
motion pictures. People can get benefits and valuable things from films. People can
learn many things from the films, learning how to struggle to get success, for
instance. Films give not only education or knowledge but also entertainment.
According to Wikipedia Enclopedia (2013), “The King's Speech” is a 2010
British historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler.
Seidler read about George VI's life after overcoming a stuttering condition that he
endured during his youth. He started writing about the relationship between the
monarch and his therapist as early as the 1980s, but at the request of the King's
widow, Queen Elizabeth the Queen’s Mother, postponed in work until her death in
2002. He later rewrote his screenplay for the stage to focus on the essential
relationship between the two protagonists. Nine weeks before filming began, Logue's
notebooks were discovered and quotations from them were incorporated into the
script.
According to Wikipedia Encyclopedia (2013), released in the United Kingdom
on 7 January 2011, The King's Speech was a major box office and critical success.
Censors initially gave it adult ratings due to profanity, though these were later revised

3

downwards after criticism by the makers and distributors in the UK and some
instances of swearing were muted in the US. On a budget of £8 million, it earned over
$400 million internationally (£250 million). It was widely praised by film critics for
its visual style, art direction, and acting. Other commentators discussed the film's
representation of historical detail, especially the reversal of Winston Churchill's
opposition to abdication. The film received many awards and nominations,
particularly for Colin Firth's performance; his Golden Globe Award for Best Actor
was the sole win at that ceremony from seven nominations. The King's Speech won
seven British Academy Film Awards, including Best Picture, and Best Actor (Firth),
Best Supporting Actor (Rush), and Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter).
The film also won four other Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Hooper),
Best Actor (Firth), and Best Original Screenplay (Seidler).
This study aimed at giving the ideas that films are part of literary works which
contain actions and happen in human life that have great value. Therefore, the writer
is interested in analyzing Bertie’s struggle in “The King’s Speech” film.
In this case, Bartie is the main actor in the film, and he has some problems when
speaking in public. He always gets stammered, but he never gives up to solve his
problems. That is why the writer is interested in understanding how Bartie struggles
to get success in public speaking.

1.2

Statement of the Problems
Based on the explanation in the background of study above, the problems are

stated as follows:

4

1.

How does Bertie struggle to get success in public speaking in “The King’s
Speech” film?

2.

What problems does Bertie face to get success in public speaking in the film?

3.

How is the result of his struggles to get success in public speaking in the film?

1.3

The purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study should be stated clearly from the beginning as the

principle guidance. They are formulated as follows:
1. To describe Bertie’s struggles to get success in public speaking in “the King’s
Speech” film.
2. To describe the problems faced by Bertie to get success in public speaking in the
film.
3. To describe the result of his struggles to get success in public speaking in the film.

1.4

Scope and Limitation
The scope of this study is focused on the Bertie’s struggle to get success, the

problems he faced in struggling to get success, and the result of his struggle in public
speaking in “the King’s Speech” film. This study is limited to the analysis on one of
the main characters, Bertie,in “The King’s Speech” film.

5

1.5

Significant of the Study
First, the writer expects that the result of the study can give contribution to the

readers to develop their knowledge about struggles. This is important for the students
who learn about literature especially on the struggles viewed from American culture.
It is hoped that from the knowledge, a new different literary opinion about “the
King’s Speech” can be established, especially in terms of how the readers interprets
their attention and his achievement. It is an interesting film because it can give many
experiences such as how to survive in life, how to face problems, etc as it happened
to Bertie in “The King’s Speech” film.
In addition, the result of this study is expected to be used as a reference for the
teachers who want to teach their students literature of films. Moreover, the result of
this study is also expected to give contribution to the next researchers who want to
analyze similar researches about films.

1.6

Definition of Key Terms
There are some key terms used in this study that must be clarified in order to

avoid misunderstanding. The writer defines the key terms as follows:
1. Analysisconsists of “taking the data apart” to determine individual responses and
then “putting it together” to summarize it. (Creswell; 2012).
2.

Struggle is a continual effort to get the final goal (Alwisol; 2009); it is great
effort to get something or overcome some difficulties in life such as to struggle to

6

save one’s life, to struggle with the wave, and to struggle with adversity (Adler,
2004:85).
3.

Success is achievement for a person’s aim, fame, wealth, etc. (oxford: 1995)

4.

THE KING’S SPEECH is an educational film directed by Tom Hooper

5.

Film is one a form of entertainment that enacts a story by a sequence of images
that gives the illusion of continues movement.

6.
