This section deals with the implementation of the literary work in teaching and learning language through literature.
Teaching English can be delivered by any sources, one of them is through literary works. Literature may provide some valuable sources of teaching and learning
English. Literature becomes a media that can increase English language mastery among students.
Culturally, literature provides knowledge about another culture to the students. The students are able to learn the historical, political, and social events from the
background of the literature. Literature also has a relationship with real life. It provides the human’s experiences, human’s relationship with other people and moral values.
In using literature as a teaching material, the teachers must select the text since not all the literary work can be used as a material in teaching learning activities. The
teacher has to adjust the students’ ability, so the student will not find the difficulties in learning English.

Those are intensive reading and extensive reading. The writer prefers to use extensive reading to the intensive reading. In extensive reading, the students are expected to
comprehend the appreciation and enjoyment of the literature :1976: 162. According to Paulston and Bruder, extensive reading is suitable for the advanced students in order to
avoid difficulties caused by the limited vocabulary of the beginners. The following are the steps to carry out teaching Extensive Reading using At Risk.

The teacher selects text passage from At Risk. 2. For the pre-reading activity, the teacher gives some questions to measure the
student’s background knowledge. 3. The students orally answer the questions by directly stating their opinion.
4. The teacher reviews the students’ answers. 5. The teacher distributes the reading material to the students.
6. The teacher asks the students to read the material. 7. The teacher asks the students to answer the comprehensive questions.
8. The teacher and the students discuss the answers to the comprehensive questions.
