Teaching language can use many methods. One of the methods that can be used is by using literary work text such as short story, poetry, drama, and novel.
However, using literary work text for teaching language is not an easy way. Many students are not interested to read literary works. They consider reading literary
works are boring. Therefore, a teacher must select appropriate texts for teaching language so that students are interested to read the texts. In order to make the
students interested to read a literary work, the reading text must be suitable with the age of the students, the students’ emotional and intellectual maturity, the students’
interest and the students’ hobbies Lazar, 1993: 52-54. Besides that, a teacher should also consider the students’ cultural
background, the students’ linguistic proficiency, the students’ literary background, the availability of text, the length of text, and the exploitability. A teacher should
consider the students’ cultural background so that the students can understand the
reading text easily. Then, the reading text should be suitable with the students’ linguistics proficiency. The students’ literary background should also be considered
because it will influence the students understanding toward literary text. Beside that, the text should be available for students and teaches, the length of the text should
consider on time available and the text should give advantage to the students Lazar, 1993: 53-54.
