CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW

A. Teaching

According to Morris, teaching can be defined as showing or helping someone, providing knowledge, causing to know to understand. 1981:174. Meanwhile, to Brown 2000:7, teaching can be defined as showing or helping someone to learn how to do something, giving instruction, guiding in the study of something, providing with knowledge causing how to know or understand. Another definition comes from Oxford Elementary Learners Dictionary. Teaching is to give somebody lesson, to tell or show somebody how to do something Oxford.2001:369. From the definition above, we can conclude that teaching is a process to know or to understand something and a process of guiding someone to do something to improve the knowledge. In this case, teacher and students should be active in learning and teaching process. Teachers can help and motivate the students in learning something that is given by teachers. Teacher helps the learners develop strategies to comprehend and learn the low frequency words of the languages Mc. Charty, 1997:11. According to Jeremy Harmer, there are some characteristic that someone should do to be a good teacher: 1. A teacher should make herhis lesson interesting 2. A teacher must love her his job 3 commit to user 4 3. A teacher should have hisher own personality 4. A teacher should have a lot of knowledge 5. A good teacher is an entertainer in a positive sense not in a negative sense Harmer, 1998:11 The students motivation is also important in teaching-learning process, because it will help this process easier and success. If there is no motivation from the teacher or the students the process of teaching-learning would be difficult and not interesting. Therefore, the students need the active and creative teacher in order to make them enjoy the teaching-learning process.

B. Learning

Learning is the learners activity during the teaching and learning process. Hock and Hill define learning a continuous process of selecting and interacting with experience that tend to satisfy the students motives. They also explain that learning process involves the selection and rejection of information or knowledge and also activities which give them a personal meaning of each student. Therefore, each student learns what is taught to extent that teaching has personal meaning for himher 1960:22. Brown 2000:7 in his book Principle of Language Learning and Teaching breaks down the component of definition of learning as follows: 1. Learning is acquisition or getting. 2. Learning is retention of information or skill. 3. Retention implies storage system, memory, and cognitive organization. commit to user 5 4. Learning involves active, conscious focus on and acting upon events outside or inside the organism. 5. Learning is relatively permanent but subject to forgetting. 6. Learning involves some form of practice, perhaps reinforced practice. 7. Learning is a chance in behavior. From the definition above, it can be concluded that learning is a process of getting information and skill from some practices and study of something.
