Research Subject’s High School Compositions

54 The twentieth question was to unveil if there were any differences in P- Man’s grammar before and after joining the international class. He said that there had been some progress, but he still had some problems. Finally, the researcher asked for some suggestions to make it easier for students to learn grammar. He suggested that teachers bore in mind that though grammar is an important part of language learning, it could be boring. Accordingly, teachers should make their grammar lessons fun and put the rules into practice to avoid boredom.

3. Research Subject’s Grammar Accuracy in Writing

The researcher collected three samples of the research subject’s writing to be analyzed. They were high school compositions consisting of composition 1 the subject’s mid-term test result and composition 2 the subject’s final test result and the subject’s today’s writing sample.

a. Research Subject’s High School Compositions

After collecting the samples of the research subject’s writing from the teacher, the researcher analyzed P-Man’s high school compositions in terms of the correct use of Subject-Verb agreement. Then, the researcher compared the number of mistakes andor correct applications of concord P-Man made in each composition. The result was subsequently used as one of the factors considered to determine the influences of the English used in the student’s classes towards his English grammar accuracy in writing. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 55 1 Composition 1 - Mid-term Test Mid Semester Test Topic: Anti-smoking Laws No. Sentences CI 1 Health is the worth thing in human life. C 2 Being recognized or not, health is the most important matter that cannot be substituted by anything else. C 3 In contrast, modern people do not always care about it. C 4 Their life style show the unhealthy habits. I 5 Moreover, the situation of people’s life are in the difficulty. I 6 They just want to be relaxed from the problems without thinking their health. C 7 They mainly do smoking when the problems are so heavy for them. C 8 In addition, the cigarette factory is the biggest tax payer in the country so that the products are so abundant. C 9 Hence, the people can easily get cigarette in low price. C 10 Afterwards, they are addicted to buy it again and again. C Number of Mistakes: 2 | Number of Correct S-V Agreement: 8 Table 4.1 Composition 1 – The Mid-term Test P-Man’s first composition was the result of his mid-term test. It consisted of ten sentences. The topic was the Anti-smoking Laws. At first, the researcher found it difficult to establish what kind of writing it was. It seemed to be an argumentative text, but it lacked arguments. P-Man merely stated facts without giving supporting arguments afterwards. Due to the indistinct features of the text, the researcher decided to disregard what kind of English texts it actually was. As seen in the above table, P-Man made two Subject-Verb agreement mistakes. The first mistake, in sentence number four, was the disagreement between the subject their life style and the verb show. Since the subject is singular, the verb should be singular as well. So, the correct sentence should be PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 56 “Their life style shows the unhealthy habits.” The second mistake was similar to the first one. He used a plural verb are after a singular noun the situation of people’s life. The correct sentence should be “Moreover, the situation of people’s life is in the difficulty.” The sentence sounded a little awkward, but it was still understandable. 2 Composition 2 - Final Test Final Test Topic: Explain how the heart functions in the body. No. Sentences CI PARAGRAPH 1 1 Heart is the most essential organ in human body. C 2 It works to pump human’s bleed everyday. C 3 Heart is located in the chest space. C 4 Because of its vitality, human heart is closed by chest bone and ribs bones. C 5 Heart is also supported by the strong muscular system. C 6 It is defined as heart muscle. C No. Sentences CI 7 It has special shape and way to work if compared with other inner organ muscle in human body. C 8 Heart has four rooms in it, such as left and right atria and left and right ventricles. C 9 Atrium is used to receive the blood; in contrast, the ventricle works to pump blood. C PARAGRAPH 2 10 Heart is the chief of human circulatory system, especially blood circulatory system. C 11 It has an important role of oxygen and nutrition transportation in human body. C 12 Heart is linked with the two kinds of blood vessels, artery and vein. C 13 They support and help heart to distribute the gases and food nutrition to the whole body. C PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 57 No. Sentences CI PARAGRAPH 3 14 Human circulatory system is double-circulatory system. C 15 It means that there are two systems of blood circulatory in human body. C 16 It also means that blood passes through heart for two times. C 17 They are small circulatory system and huge circulatory system. C PARAGRAPH 4 18 First, small circulatory system is a circulatory process from the heart to the lungs. C 19 This circulatory sistem starts from the cava vein, the major vein vessel. C 20 It transports the deoxygenated blood from both upper and lower body parts, except lungs. C 21 This blood then flows into the right atrium of heart. C 22 Through the tricuspidale valve, the deoxygenated blood is moved into the right ventricle room. C 23 After that the blood is pumped out of heart by right ventricle. C 24 Then the blood flows through the pulmonary artery. C 25 This artery is the only strange artery because its job is different from the other artery that usually brings deoxygenated blood. C 26 This artery vessel allows deoxygenated blood and the rest of metabolism process. C 27 In the lungs the deoxygenated blood is restructured. C 28 Then the exchanging process between oxygen and carbondioxyde occurs in alveoli, part of the lungs. C 29 After occurring, the blood is now bringing the oxygen gas. C 30 Afterwards, the oxygenated blood flows into the heart through the pulmonary vein. C 31 This pulmonary vein also has strange and special task than the other vein that often transports carbondioxyde in the blood. C 32 Finally, the oxygenated blood is moved to left atrium for the next huge circulatory system. C PARAGRAPH 5 33 Second, the huge circulatory system is a circulatory process from heart to the whole body, except lungs. C 34 The step of oxygenated blood is continued . C 35 After reaching the left atrium, the oxygenated blood passes through the bicuspidale valve to move into the left ventricle. C PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 58 No. Sentences CI 36 The oxygenated blood is then pumped out of the heart through the aorta. C 37 In aorta the oxygenated blood could not go back to heart anymore because of the semilunaris valve. C 38 The oxygenated blood flows into the artery until the capillary to exchange the food nutrition and oxygen with the carbondioxyde and the rest of metabolism with the body tissue. C 39 The carbondioxyde and the rest of metabolism are transported through veins until cava vein. C 40 Then they go back to heart again and are exchanged in the lungs. C Number of Mistakes: 0 | Number of Correct S-V Agreement: 40 Table 4.1 Composition 2 – The Final Test The second composition was in the form of an explanation. It was about the way a human heart functions. It consisted of forty sentences which were arranged into five paragraphs. The explanation was written as a final test at the end of the semester. The research subject did not make any Subject-Verb agreement mistakes in the second composition. He successfully applied the rules of concord in his five-paragraph long composition. He also managed to make use of a number of specific terminologies in Biology. Yet, there were still some minor mistakes in terms of spelling, word forms, and diction. P-Man misspelled the word “system” in his nineteenth sentence, while he wrote “bleed” instead of “blood” in his second sentence. He also chose the word “space” to follow “chest” to refer to the chest cavity, the commonly used terminology to describe the hollow space inside a human chest. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 59 Despite the negligible mistakes he made, P-Man’s second composition showed a positive development from the first one. He went from two Subject- Verb agreement mistakes to none in half a semester. This proved the assumption that the progress came from the English used in his Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology lessons. The discovery was strengthened by P-Man’s testimony in the interview that the exposure of English in those subjects contributed to his English skills development.
