54 The twentieth question was to unveil if there were any differences in P-
Man’s grammar before and after joining the international class. He said that there had been some progress, but he still had some problems. Finally, the researcher
asked for some suggestions to make it easier for students to learn grammar. He suggested that teachers bore in mind that though grammar is an important part of
language learning, it could be boring. Accordingly, teachers should make their grammar lessons fun and put the rules into practice to avoid boredom.
3. Research Subject’s Grammar Accuracy in Writing
The researcher collected three samples of the research subject’s writing to be analyzed. They were high school compositions consisting of composition 1
the subject’s mid-term test result and composition 2 the subject’s final test result and the subject’s today’s writing sample.
a. Research Subject’s High School Compositions
After collecting the samples of the research subject’s writing from the teacher, the researcher analyzed P-Man’s high school compositions in terms of the
correct use of Subject-Verb agreement. Then, the researcher compared the number of mistakes andor correct applications of concord P-Man made in each
composition. The result was subsequently used as one of the factors considered to determine the influences of the English used in the student’s classes towards his
English grammar accuracy in writing.

Table 4.1 Composition 1 – The Mid-term Test
P-Man’s first composition was the result of his mid-term test. It consisted of ten sentences. The topic was the Anti-smoking Laws. At first, the researcher
found it difficult to establish what kind of writing it was. It seemed to be an argumentative text, but it lacked arguments. P-Man merely stated facts without
giving supporting arguments afterwards. Due to the indistinct features of the text, the researcher decided to disregard what kind of English texts it actually was.
As seen in the above table, P-Man made two Subject-Verb agreement mistakes. The first mistake, in sentence number four, was the disagreement
between the subject their life style and the verb show. Since the subject is singular, the verb should be singular as well. So, the correct sentence should be
PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
56 “Their life style shows the unhealthy habits.” The second mistake was similar to
the first one. He used a plural verb are after a singular noun the situation of people’s life. The correct sentence should be “Moreover, the situation of people’s
life is in the difficulty.” The sentence sounded a little awkward, but it was still understandable.

Table 4.1 Composition 2 – The Final Test
The second composition was in the form of an explanation. It was about the way a human heart functions. It consisted of forty sentences which were
arranged into five paragraphs. The explanation was written as a final test at the end of the semester.
The research subject did not make any Subject-Verb agreement mistakes in the second composition. He successfully applied the rules of concord in his
five-paragraph long composition. He also managed to make use of a number of specific terminologies in Biology.
Yet, there were still some minor mistakes in terms of spelling, word forms, and diction. P-Man misspelled the word “system” in his nineteenth sentence,
while he wrote “bleed” instead of “blood” in his second sentence. He also chose the word “space” to follow “chest” to refer to the chest cavity, the commonly used
terminology to describe the hollow space inside a human chest.

59 Despite the negligible mistakes he made, P-Man’s second composition
showed a positive development from the first one. He went from two Subject- Verb agreement mistakes to none in half a semester. This proved the assumption
that the progress came from the English used in his Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology lessons. The discovery was strengthened by P-Man’s
testimony in the interview that the exposure of English in those subjects contributed to his English skills development.
