Perubahan keadaan suatu bahan

The Kinetic-Molecular Description of Gas,
Liquids and Solids
Gas
Kumpulan dari molekul-molekul yang terpisah
relatif jauh
Energi kinetik dari molekulnya lebih besar drpd
gaya tarik-menarik antar molekulnya.
Tidak adanya gaya tarik-menarik yang kuat antar
molekulnya menyebabkan gas bisa mengembang
mengisi wadahnya
Jika gaya tarik-menarik antar molekulnya menjadi
cukup besar, maka gas akan menunjukkan
perilaku non-ideal
Cairan
Gaya
tarik-menarik cukup kuat untuk menahan
molekul-molekul cukup dekat satu dg lainnya.
Meskipun demikian gaya tarik antar molekulnya tdk
cukup kuat sehingga molekul-molekul masih bisa
bergerak bebas melewati atau menggelincir satu sama
lainnya.
Padatan
Gaya tarik antar molekul cukup kuat untuk
menahan molekul-molekul pada posisi yang
tetap
Padatan sebagaimana cairan tdk mudah ditekan
karena sempitnya jarak antar molekul.
Jika molekul padatan tersusun secara sangat
teratur, maka susunan tsb disebut kristalin
(crystalline)
Fasa dari suatu zat tergantung dari keseimbangan
antara energi kinetik dari masing-masing partikelnya
dengan gaya intermolekulnya
Energi kinetik menjaga molekul-molekul berjauhan
dan bergerak bebas, dan energi kinetik ini
merupakan fungsi dari suhu zat
Explaining the physical properties of gases was
simplified since the interactions between the gas
molecules could be ignored.
However the particles in a liquid or solid are fairly close
together and their mutual interactions cannot be
ignored.
Liquids and solids are called
CONDENSED PHASES
and intermolecular forces will play a major role in
explaining their physical properties.
Gaya intermolekular berusaha menarik partikel-
partikel menjadi berdekatan.
Gas memiliki gaya intermolekul yang lebih kecil
dari cairan, sedang cairan memiliki gaya
intermolekul yang lebih kecil dari padatan
Untuk membedakan dengan gas, padatan dan cairan
dikenal dengan condensed phases, karena memiliki
partikel-partikel yang berdekatan.

Intermolecular Forces
Attractive forces between neutral molecules
Dipole-dipole forces
London dispersion forces
Hydrogen bonding forces
Attractive forces between neutral and charged (ionic)
molecules
ion-dipole forces
Note that all of these forces will be electrostatic in
nature
Tarik menarik molekul polar
Molekul polar memiliki ujung yang bermuatan
berlawanan. Masing-masing molekul cenderung
mengambil posisi sehingga ujung positif mendekati
ujung negatif molekul lainnya.
antar molekul semakin lebar. Sehingga untuk gas,
tarik menarik ini tidak berpengaruh
Intermolecular Forces
Hanya 16 kJ/mol diperlukan utk melawan gaya tarik antar
molekul tdk berubah.
Suhu saat cairan mendidih menunjukkan besarnya energi
kinetik yang diperlukan utk mengatasi gaya antar molekulnya
(sebagaimana suhu saat padatan mencair).
Jadi kekuatan gaya antar molekul akan menentukan sifat
fisis dari senyawa
Ion-dipole
A Coulombic Interaction between an ion and the dipole moment of a
molecule. Dipole moments occur when the charge distribution in a
molecule is asymmetric.
Molecules with a dipole moment are called polar molecules.
Dipole-Dipole Forces
London Dispersion Forces
Hydrogen Bonding
Hydrogen bonds are considered to be dipole-dipole type
interactions
• A bond between hydrogen and an electronegative atom
such as F, O or N is quite polar:
• Hydrogen bonds vary from about 4 kJ/mol to 25 kJ/mol
(so they are still weaker than typical covalent bonds)
• They are very important in the organization of
biological molecules, especially in influencing
the structure of proteins
• Kekuatan sekitar 5-10% dari kekuatan ikatan
kovalen. Ikatan ini bertanggungjawab terhadap
cairnya air disuhu kamar
Hydrogen Bonding in water
When cooled to a solid the water molecules
organize into an arrangement which
maximizes the attractive interactions of the
hydrogen bonds
This arrangement of molecules has greater
volume (is less dense) than liquid water, thus
water expands when frozen
The arrangement has a hexagonal geometry
(involving six molecules in a ring structure)
which is the structural basis of the sixsidedness seen in snow flakes
Each water molecule can participate in four
hydrogen bonds
One with each non-bonding pair of
electrons
One with each H atom

Mengubah fasa suatu zat
Temperature
padatan.
Tekanan
Menambah tekanan pada suatu zat memaksa molekul-molekul
saling berdekatan, sehingga meningkatkan kekuatan dari gaya
intermolekulernya.
Meningkatkan tekanan pada gas dapat mengubah fasanya
menjadi cairan.
Meningkatkan tekanan pada suatu cairan dapat mengubah
fasanya menjadi padatan.
Pengaruh T dan P pada fasa zat
Changes of State
Perubahan Energi yang
Menyertai Perubahan Fasa
Ketika perubahan fasa melibatkan the
disruption of intermolecular forces maka
harus disuplai dengan energi
The disruption of intermolecular forces
menyertai perubahan fasa yang menuju pada
fasa yang lebih tidak teratur.
Energi yang harus disuplai untuk mengubah fasa
Ice (heat of fusion) = 6.01 kJ/mol
Water (heat of vaporization) = 40.67 kJ/mol
Kapasitas energi untuk menaikkan suhu fasa
Specific heat of ice = 2.09 J/g K
Specific heat of water = 4.18 J/g K
Specific heat of water vapor = 1.84 J/g K
Properties of Liquids
Viscosity
The resistance of a liquid to flow
The Physical Basis of Viscosity
Viscosity is a measure of the ease with which molecules move past
one another
It depends on the attractive force between the molecules
It depends on whether there are structural features which may
cause neighboring molecules to become "entangled"
Viscosity decreases with increasing temperature - the increasing
kinetic energy overcomes the attractive forces and molecules can
more easily move past each other
Properties of Liquids
Surface Tension
Surface tension is the
energy required to
increase the surface
area of a liquid by a
unit amount
Energy Changes Accompanying Changes of
State
The melting process for a solid is also referred to as
fusion
The enthalpy change associated with melting a solid is
often called the heat of fusion (DHfus)
Ice DHfus = 6.01 kJ/mol
The heat needed for the vaporization of a liquid is
called the heat of vaporization (DHvap)
Water DHvap = 40.67 kJ/mol
Vapor Pressure
The molecular basis of vapor pressure
What if molecules in the interior of the liquid decides to
leave the liquid phase and go into the vapor phase?
Phase Diagrams
The curves indicate the conditions of temperature and pressure under
which equilibrium between different phases of a substance can exist
Phase Diagram for Water
Garis Kurva
The curves indicate the conditions of temperature and pressure
under which equilibrium between different phases of a substance
can exist
The vapor pressure curve is the border between the liquid and
gaseous states of the substance
For a given temperature, it tells us the vapor pressure of the substance
The vapor pressure curve ends at the critical point.
critical point:
The temperature above which the gas cannot be liquefied no
matter how much pressure is applied (the kinetic energy simply
is too great for attractive forces to overcome, regardless of the
applied pressure)
The line between the gas and solid phase indicates the vapor pressure
of the solid as it sublimes at different temperatures
The line between the solid and liquid phases indicates the melting
temperature of the solid as a function of pressure
For most substances the solid is denser than the liquid
An increase in pressure usually favors the more dense solid phase
Usually higher temperatures are required to melt the solid phase at higher
pressures
The "triple point" is the particular condition of temperature and
pressure where all three physical states are in equilibrium
Regions not on a line represent conditions of temperature and pressure
where only one particular phase is present
Gases are most likely under conditions of high temperature
Solids are most likely under conditions of high pressure
