CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
As social creature, human beings always need to communicate with
others. Communication represents the vital and elementary social process in
human life. Communication is said to be elementary, because each human
being uses it to reach the targets, and to be able to fulfill the requirements.
While communication is said vital, because people cannot obviate themselves
from relating to others. According to Tondowidjojo (1985: 4), communication
is interpreted as submitting information, idea, and certain attitude from
someone to others. There are assorted ways of communication used in society
one of them is mass communication.
In popular usage, the term mass communication generates an image about
television, radio, newspaper, magazine, etc. Reaching mass communication, in
short scope, usually the forwarding is such as in meeting forum, or lecturing in
class. In the long distance, the delivering information utilize equipments which
are called mass media such as electronic media (TV, radio) and print media
(magazine).
Written in the Collins Concise dictionary, magazine is a periodic
paperback
publication
containing
articles,
fictions,
photographs,
etc
(McLaughlin, 2003: 1). There are some characteristic s of magazine. The first
point refers to the frequency. Magazine is issued in regular intervals such as

weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or quarterly. The next reference is to the material
form of magazine. Paperback is a term used to point type of book rather than a
magazine. Now, the quality of the material magazine can vary. For example,
weekly magazine is made from cheaper quality paper, and monthly magazine is
higher quality. It often uses glossy paper. The quality of the paper can influence
on the magazine connotation. Connotation is an association of concept has for
the reader, such as glossy paper connotes sophistication and glamour. The last
reference relates to the original meaning of magazine ‘storehouse of
information’.
Cool and Smart magazine (C n S) is English teen magazine. It is
published by Pusat Penerbitan Lia, Jakarta which is issued monthly. One of the
contents of C n S magazine is u ought to know column. In the column, there are
subs-columns such as school zone column. School Zone column contains the
information about school whether it is senior high school, vocational high
school, or university especially in Jakarta. At this column, the readers obtain
the information about its existence, facilities and even activities exist in the
school.
Exposition discourse means explanation, or an exposing information or
idea (Decker, 1984: xxiii). Exposition is one of the basic aims communication.
Yet much of the writing and speaking everyday activities call for expository,
requiring us to share our knowledge of a subject. The primary function of
exposition is merely to explain.

Exposition is a kind of discourse based on the target of communication.
The term discourse has wide meaning because of the difference scope and
science discipline. In linguistics study, discourse shows the unity of language,
which is generally bigger than sentence whether sent verbally or writtenly. In
accordance with the statement, in Collins Concise English dictionary (cited in
Eriyanto, 2006:1), dis course has three meanings. First, discourse is verbal
communication, utterance, and conversation. Second, discourse is a formal
treatment from subject in utterance or article. Third, discourse is a unit of text
used by linguist to analyse set of language.
As a text, discourse is not only sequence of sentences which do not have
humanity tying, but also there is situation which makes sentence becoming a
text. The study of discourse in linguistics represents reaction to the linguistic
study which only checks language aspect just on sentence or word.
In this paper, the accurate matters are types of exposition patterns and the
elements of exposition discourse on C n S magazine, especially at School Zone
column. The reason makes the researcher interests in conducting this research,
because now people are aware that communication determines the aspect of
human life. In this case, especially the current information of mass media is
central enough. Considering the big and streng influence of mass media, hence
people can exploit and use efficiently for the deve lopment purpose. It specially
focuses on the young generations development who have great responsible.
On that account, the existence of analysis in C n S magazine at School
Zone column is expected to give additional knowledge to the reader. Besides,

this analysis can motivate the readers to develop their talents in writing or to
make English magazine which is dedicated to educate its reader.
B. Previous Study
The study related to this research has been conducted by Sri Kuswandari
(2007), entitled An Analysis Of Narrative Discourse Of The Language Used In
Different Fond Different Fish Column Of Kangguru Magazine. In her research,
she found out the aspect of narrative structure and the linguistic element of
narrative discourse which focused on cohesion and coherence. The data were
taken using technique of documentation. The data source was Kangguru
magazine.
The other researcher is Sri Handayani (2007). She analysed about A
Discourse Analysis of Your Letter in the Jakarta Post Newspaper. While in this
research, the researcher analyses the patterns and elements of exposition
discourse in School Zone column of Cool and Smart magazine.
C. Problem Statement
Based on the background above, the problem statements can be
formulated as follows:
1. What are the types of exposition patterns used in School Zone column of C
n S magazine?
2. What are the elements configurating exposition discourse?

D. Objective of the Study
In relation to the above problem statements, the objectives of the study
are:
1. to describe the types of exposition patterns used in School Zone column of
C n S magazine.
2. to describe the elements exposition discourse in School Zone column of C n
S magazine.
E. Limitation of the Study
This research analyses the patterns and elements of exposition discourse
used in School Zone column of C n S magazine.
F. Benefit of the Study
The researcher hopes that her research on exposition in School Zone
column of C n S magazine has some benefits, namely:

Academic Benefit
This study gives contribution to discourse study especia lly in
exposition discourse.

Practical Benefit
a. The readers get more knowledge or information about discourse toward
the exposition discourse.
b. The result of this research can be used to add reference to other
researchers in analysing the exposition discourse.

G. Paper Organization
The organization of research is given in order to make the readers
understand the content of the paper.
Chapter I is introduction, which consists of background of the study,
previous study, problem statement, objective of the study, limitation of the
study, benefit of the study, and organization of research paper.
Chapter II is the underlying theory. It deals with notion of discourse
analysis, types of discourse, patterns of exposition discourse, and difference of
discourse, text and context.
Chapter III is the research method. It consists of type of research, object of
research, data and data source, method of data collection, and technique of data
analysis.
Chapter IV is research result. In this chapter, the researcher presents the
data analysis, the discussion of research findings.
Chapter V is conclusion and suggestion.
