1.2 The Problems of the Research

This research focused to answers two main problems that were aroused from the background of the research. The problems are in the form of questions as following: a. What types of infringement in Gricean Cooperative Principle do the negotiators commit in the movie The Negotiator? b. How does the infringement of Gricean Cooperative Principle convey certain meaning?

1.3 The Objectives of the Research

There were some objectives of the research that were derived from the questions in the problems of the research. These are the objectives of the research: a. To see the types of infringement in Gricean Cooperative Principle the negotiators commit in the movie The Negotiator b. To disclose the meaning conveyed behind the infringement of Gricean Cooperative Principle

1.4 The Significances of the Research

This research was designed in order to give several significances as follow: 1.4.1 For the English Education Students This research was expected to help English education students draw deeper understanding on discourse analysis course, specifically to the notion of the types of infringement of the Cooperative Principle. By reading the result of this research, I hope that they might see the examples of how to infringe the Cooperative Principle to achieve certain goal in communication so that they might be more interested and more interesting in using English for communication. 1.4.2 For the Trainee Teachers I hope that trainee teachers will get benefits through reading the result of this research. They might be enlightened to see the power within English, so in the future, they do not just teach the form of English but they are also able to teach English with context. Moreover, trainee teachers are also expected to be more creative in preparing learning materials and presenting English as learning subject, be able to draw their students to love English and to learn more about it. 7
