CHAPTER IV DATA ANALYSIS

4.1 Cultural Word

Cultural words are words that associated with a particular language and cannot be literally translated. Based on the cultural words classification that is presented by the table below, it can be said that the largest amount of cultural word belongs to material culture. Meanwhile, the fewest amount of cultural word belongs to gestures and habits word. There are 107 cultural words found from the novel. Those cultural words are divided into 5 classes: 1 ecology, 2 material culture, 3 social culture, 4 organization, customs and ideas, and 5 gestures and habits. There are 30 words found from the novel. The researcher divides the ecology words into 3 groups: a animals, b plants, and c plains. a Animals Newmark 1998:95 classifies animal in the cultural word because he argues that many countries has local names for animal. Most of those local names cannot be literally translated because of some brief cultural items behind the names. There are 11 animals found from the novel. Example: Data number 73 SL It looks about the size of a raccoon, but it hangs from the bottom of a branch, swaying ever so slightly.
