2.7 Novel
The researcher chooses a novel for this analysis because the researcher wants to know how the translator can reproduce a story into the target
language. The researcher argues that novel is a good analysis project because there are so many things that can be explored about translation.
The Hunger Games is the first book of The Hunger Games Trilogy the second book entitled Catching Fire and the final book entitled Mocking Jay.
The English version of The Hunger Games is a best seller novel published by scholastic press, written by New York Times bestselling author named
Suzanne Collins. In 2008 when this novel was firstly published to the public in USA, the scholastic publisher sold 200.000 copies. Until the end of 2012, this
novel is sold for more than 24.000.000 copies. The novel has 26 chapters and 368 pages. This novel had been translated into 26 languages and sold in 43
countries. This novel also becomes more popular after The Hunger Games film released on March 2012.
Gramedia Pustaka Utama is the publisher for the Indonesian version of The Hunger Games and Hetih Rusli is the translator who translates this novel
from English into Indonesian language. According to her biography in internet www.hetihrusli.com, Hetih Rusli has translated so many translation projects,
analysis, books all genre and about 62 fiction books. She also has worked as translator for more than 15 years and joined with Gramedia Pustaka Utama
since 2000.
Gramedia Pustaka Utama printed the Indonesian version novel for eight times until May 2012. The novel was firstly published on October 2009, then
November 2009, March 2012, then two times on April 2012, and two times also on May 2012. This novel has 408 pages, 26 chapters which are divided in
3 parts.
2.8 Figurative Framework
This research is made by logical thinking that translators have to translate both language and culture from the source language into the target
language. In translating the text, the translators face with a number of
problems. One of those problems is about culture. The cultural problem analysis of this research focuses at word to phrase,
so the researcher chooses the cultural word theory by Newmark. The researcher tries to relate the cultural word with some strategies. The strategies are
foreignization and domestication by Venuti. To analyze about the strategies, the researcher makes an interview with
a professional translator named Slamat Parsaoran Sinambela to discuss about the strategies accuracy. The researcher also makes an interview with some
target readers about the strategies and the readability. From the questionnaire, the researcher gets the target readers’ opinions about the readability level of
each cultural word. Finally, the researcher finishes this analysis by some conclusion and suggestions. This framework is illustrated by the picture below.
