Table 4.2 shows that the students are learning English for various reasons. Almost all students 95 are learning English to be able to pass English exams,
thus, revealing how the students are very concerned about school exams. The majority of the students 91 are learning English so that they can travel to other
countries and can understand English films. Many of them are learning English to be
able to
understand English
songs 86

booksnewspapersmagazines 82. In addition, while most of the students 77 are learning English because they enjoy doing it, which means there is an
intrinsic motivation, at the same time some of them are learning English because their parents want them to do so 36 and some do not know why they are
learning it 32. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
In terms of students‟ language needs and wants, it is found that all students like the four English skills. As seen in Table 4.2, all students like listening and
writing and the majority 86 like reading and speaking. The above finding is supported by students‟ answer related to language
areas they want to improve. All students claimed that they need more practice in listening. Moreover, the majority of the students stated that they also need more
practice in writing, reading, speaking, vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. It turns out that grammar is a language area they wanted to improve the
least. Referring to the ways of learning, especially the models of work, students
prefer working in groups 91 and working in pairs 82 to working alone 68 and working as a whole class 50. The English teacher stated that the
difficulty she faces when teaching the students is the classroom management. She said that the students are really active and often make noises during the teaching
learning process Appendix 10. Thus, group works and pair works work best to help teachers to manage the class. In addition, most of the students 86 like
doing written and oral exercises. Other popular answers by the students are discussing in the classroom, reading texts, using computers, and playing games.
On the other hand, only half of the students like listening to CDs, while only few of them like reading aloud in class 45 and using the internet 41.
Another aspect that was investigated was the way the students learn vocabulary. As presented in table, most of the students 91 learn vocabulary by
hearing, seeing, and translating new words. Meanwhile, the majority of them 86 also learn vocabulary by copying new words.
