Those pieces of information were found in the standards of competence and basic competences of English for elementary school grade 5 Semester 1 as showed in the following table. In addition to collecting information from some documents, the researcher also conducted a needs analysis to collect information about learners‟ attitudes towards English language learning, learners‟ language needs and wants, and learning preferences styles. To do this, the researcher delivered a questionnaire adapted from Tzotzou 2014. The results of the needs analysis are presented in Table 4.2. Almost all students 95 are learning English to be able to pass English exams, thus, revealing how the students are very concerned about school exams. The majority of the students 91 are learning English so that they can travel to other countries and can understand English films. Many of them are learning English to be able to understand English songs 86 and English booksnewspapersmagazines 82. In addition, while most of the students 77 are learning English because they enjoy doing it, which means there is an intrinsic motivation, at the same time some of them are learning English because their parents want them to do so 36 and some do not know why they are learning it 32. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI In terms of students‟ language needs and wants, it is found that all students like the four English skills. As seen in Table 4.2, all students like listening and writing and the majority 86 like reading and speaking. The above finding is supported by students‟ answer related to language areas they want to improve. All students claimed that they need more practice in listening. Moreover, the majority of the students stated that they also need more practice in writing, reading, speaking, vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. It turns out that grammar is a language area they wanted to improve the least. Referring to the ways of learning, especially the models of work, students prefer working in groups 91 and working in pairs 82 to working alone 68 and working as a whole class 50. The English teacher stated that the difficulty she faces when teaching the students is the classroom management. She said that the students are really active and often make noises during the teaching learning process Appendix 10. Thus, group works and pair works work best to help teachers to manage the class. In addition, most of the students 86 like doing written and oral exercises. Other popular answers by the students are discussing in the classroom, reading texts, using computers, and playing games. On the other hand, only half of the students like listening to CDs, while only few of them like reading aloud in class 45 and using the internet 41. Another aspect that was investigated was the way the students learn vocabulary. As presented in table, most of the students 91 learn vocabulary by hearing, seeing, and translating new words. Meanwhile, the majority of them 86 also learn vocabulary by copying new words.
