1 Validation of the Materials from Materials Experts The following table presents the materials experts‟ judgment towards the developed materials, including the PowerPoint presenta tion, teacher‟s manual, and student book. It is indicated from the mean score that is 5, the maximum score. In other words, the materials already follow the implemented curriculum accordingly. Statements number 2 to 7 represent the quality of materials according to the principles of materials development proposed by Tomlinson 1998. The table shows that the materials have various topics, illustration, and activities, provide attractive presentation, and have appealing content. This finding is supported by the data from the answers of open-ended questions in the questionnaire as follows. I like the graphics. They are easy on the eyes. OEQ11: Appendix 8 It contains various activities and uses lots of colorful pictures which are very attractive for young learners. OEQ12: Appendix 8 If I were the students, I would be very happy with this kind of materials because it is colorful, interesting, and has many pictures. OEQ13: Appendix 8 In addition, all respondents have the same judgment that the materials provide an opportunity to use English to achieve communicative purpose, consider different learning styles, and expose learners to language in authentic use. The table shows that the corresponding statements are all categorized into „very good‟ with the mean score of 4.3. One of the respondent claimed that the materials “contain various activities” OEQ13: Appendix 8, thus supporting the statement that the materials take into account that learners differ in learning styles. Statements number 7 to 14 are based on the conditions for optimal language learning environments or known as pedagogical learning aspects proposed by Egbert and Hanson-Smith 2007. The table shows that statements number 7 to 14 are in the „very good‟ and „good‟ category which means the materials expose the learners to language in authentic use, encourage interaction, encourage learners to produce varied and creative language, provide enough time and feedback, guide learners to attend mindfully to the learning process, offer opportunity to interact and negotiate meaning, and provide an ideal classroom atmosphere. However, all respondents were not sure if the materials support learning autonomy. It is indicated from the mean score, 3.0, which is categorized into „fair‟. In addition to the closed-ended questions, the experts also responded to open-ended questions related to the materials. In general, the experts stated that the materials have an interesting and attractive presentation as previously stated. The teacher‟s manual is also considered to be helpful. This is indicated from the following answers. It‟s good that you have included the teacher‟s manual. OEQ21: Appendix 8. The teacher is also provided with the manual to use the materials which is very helpful for himher. OEQ23: Appendix 8 Although the teacher‟s manual is considered helpful, it still needs i mprovement in some parts. One of the respondent stated that “in some parts, however, it doesn‟t help T with the classroom language”. Another good side of the developed materials is that it covers the four language skills. This is drawn from the following statement. The materials also cover the 4 skills that we have to master in learning language that is Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. OEQ12: Appendix 8 The materials have covered the four language skills and use various media such as pictures and videos. OEQ 23: Appendix 8 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI The respondents were also asked to give their opinion about the downside of the materials or what need to be improved. Based on their point of view, it is necessary to add more vocabulary and writing exercises. Also, it was found that some audios in the PowerPoint presentation are not clear. These findings are drawn from the following answers. The audio in some slides is not loud and clear enough. OEQ 31: Appendix 8 Give more writing practice especially for unit 2. OEQ 33: Appendix 8 I think you can add more vocabulary in the material since the materials is for grade 5. OEQ 32: Appendix 8 2 Validation of the Materials from Technology Experts The following table presents the experts‟ judgment towards the developed materials, especially the PowerPoint presentation. All of the staments are based on the essential elements of good software design by Boling and Soo 1999.
