C. Theoretical Framework

The understanding of the meaning of teacher talk can be reacherd from some aspects. It can be seen from definition, the role, the functions, and the categorization. It is mentioned in the literary review that teacher talk is a special language the teachers use when they are addressing the target language to the learners in the classroom. Teacher talk is a special communicative activity. Teacher uses the appropriate talk in conducting instruction, transfering knowledge, and managing classroom activity. For the language learners who learn English as a foreign language such as in Indonesia, classroom is likely to be the main place and source where they achieve the target language input. In terms of student s‟ acquisition of the target language input, the language used by the teacher in the classroom gives influence to the knowledge that the students will achieve. It happens because the students mostly will imitate the utterances used by the teacher in the classroom. Therefore, the teachers should be able to determine the functional language they use in the classroom whether or not it will give more contributions to students ‟ achievement of the target language. For the beginner language learner, the input plays as a critical role in language learning because they still have less prior knowledge of the target language. As Krashen 2004 says that learners will begin to produce the language naturally when they have enough exposure to comprehensible input. Teacher talk in the classroom, therefore, becomes an important part in language learning to students ‟ comprehensible input of the target language. In this study, the researcher observed the process of teaching-learning English in Elementary school. The reseacher tried to find out and describe the 38 functions of the language used by the teacher during the process of teaching and learing in Elementary school English class. 38

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology applied in conducting the study. It provides an explanation on how the study is planned and conducted in order to answer the research question related to teacher talk in Elementary school English class.

A. Research Plan 1. Research Method

Since this research aims to answer “What are the functions of teacher talk in Elementary School English class? ” The researcher adopted descriptive qualitative research as a research method. In this qualitative research, the researcher identifyed a topic to obtain in depth analysis within natural context. Allwright and Baily 1991 state that naturalistic inquiry is adopted when researcher wants to investigate what is realy going on in foreign language classroom. “Naturalistic Inquiry” refers to that researcher tries not to intervene in the research setting and does not try to control naturally occuring events, because the study wishes to describe and understand the process of teaching-learning and the performance of the teacher in the classroom. Hence, the researcher typically observes, interviews and analyzes the data obtained from the research field.

2. Nature of Data

In order to support the completeness of the data and to answer the research problem, this study used two instruments to get the data. The data were collected from the observation during the process of teaching-learning English. The form of
