E. Definition of Terms

In analyzing this novel, there are some terms that have to be clarified in order to provide an accurate analysis and a clearer explanation to answer the formulated problems. These terms are: 1. Influence According to The New Oxford American Dictionary 2005: 865, influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behaviour of someone or something, or the effect itself. 2. Western Christian Priest According to The New Oxford American Dictionary 2005: 1908, Western means living in or originating from West, in particular Europe or the U.S. Priest is defined as someone authorized to perform the sacred rites of a religion especially as a mediatory agent between humans and God. Personality Development According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 2001: 370, development means the gradual growth of something. Here, it refers to one of the main character’s personality development. In this study, the influence of a Western Christian priest to a traditional Chinese woman’s personality development means the result of the effect of a Christian priest coming from the West to the characteristic development of a non- Christian Chinese woman with strong Chinese cultural orientation and ethnic pride.
