The problem was the uninteresting materials that the teachers gave. Teachers seldom gave them a fable which was actually more interesting than only a plain text. From the interview, the writer concluded that, generally, the teachers agreed that fables can develop students’ motivation and interest to read English passages. The results of the interview with the English teachers of SMP N 3 Sleman are presented in Appendix 4.

2. Formulating Goals, Topics and General Purposes

Having done the needs survey and gathered the data, the writer formulated the goals of designing a set of supplementary instructional reading materials for the second semester of the first grade students of SMP N 3 Sleman. Goals are general statements of language programs that become the basis of a teaching and learning process. There were two goals in the study; that is, to develop students’ reading skills and to grow students’ enthusiasm to read English texts. 51 Then, the writer listed topic s that would be presented in each unit. In arranging the topics, the writer firstly considered the curriculum, whether these topics were appropriate or not to give to the second semester of the first grade Junior High School students. Secondly, the writer also considered the social situation most likely faced by the students. There were eight 8 topics selected in the study. They were taken from the moral lessons taught in each lesson unit. The topics were as follows: 1. Slow and steady can win the race 2. A simple life has its own blessings 3. One good turn deserves another 4. Do not take more than you need 5. Never judge your enemy’s strength by his size 6. If you try hard enough, you may soon find an answer to your problem 7. Do not try to act big when you are really small 8. Those who lie and boast may end up in trouble Next, the writer stated the general purposes of what should be achieved by the students by reading the topics selected. The general purposes are stated as the competence standard. The competence standards were that at the end of the course, students are able to: 1. understand the contentgeneral idea conveyed in the fables. 2. understand the specific information of the fables. 3. comprehend the topics through fables using special comprehension learnt 52 from the exercises in each lesson unit.

3. Specifying Learning Objectives

Based on the competence standards above, the writer specified them into basic competencies. The basic competence is the expected achievement in the future after students learn the materials given.
