Theory of Characterization In order to interpret the characters that are presented in the novel, the reader can interpret character’s moral and traits through what they say and what they do. This method is called characterization. To be more specific, Murphy 1972:161- 173 gives more detailed nine techniques of characterization that used by the author to describe the characters of a story. a. Personal Description The author uses this method particularly to give the description of face, body, and other physical appearances. b. Speech The author gives the readers some clues to a person’s character in the book through what the character says. Whenever a character is in conversation with another and whenever a character gives such opinions, a character is giving the readers some clues to its character’s personality. d. Past life The author can describe a character from the character’s past life to give clues to events that have helped to shape a person’s character. e. Conversation of others The author can describe a character through the things other people say about the character. f. Reactions The author can describe a character through how the character reacts toward various situations and events. g. Direct comment The author can describe or comment on a character directly.
